Anyone heard of a Spalding "Flamethrower" ignition setup?
I'm looking to purchase one of these original setups from the sixties to potentially be used on my 289. Please email me if you have any information about them or know of where I can find one that's perhaps been lying around...

Never heard of Spalding, but Pertronix makes the Flame-Thrower billet distributor, ignition box and coils. Pertronix has used the "Flame-Thrower" line forever. Look on page 75 in this months Summit.

actually it's "spaulding" and i believe later on it became "grant". the distributor is basically split in 1/2. instead of having 8 cam lobes for the points to operate on it uses 4 and has 2 rotors (on the same drum) and 2 distributor caps and 2 coils. from what i understand this system has advantages over a normal distributor (less point bounce, more dwell time, less chance of cross firing, etc...). i have one that i purchased from an old days shelby employee that i have not decided whether i'm going to use or not. from what i have heard someone is supposed to be reproducing the caps and rotor, the points are readily available. as per ricks post below shelby listed this as both an option and a "over the counter" performance upgrade.

Man this would really be going back to the dark ages. They were shown in some of the very first pictures of the HP 260 V8 that was put in the very 1st Cobras prior to actual production. They look like a Magneto (tall) but I am not sure of their actual workings. I would have thought that if they were on the cutting edge that they would have been more popular. You might contact one of the "Old School" magneto manufactures and they may be able to give you some leads or information........Good luck
