WANTED: Tired but rebuildable COBRA 9000 Tach...

These were the ones available as an "over the counter" item at either Ford dealerships or Shelby American. The tach is made by Faria out of Connecticut circa 1966. Has a black face with white numbers (0-9000K) and the cobra logo centered at the bottom of the tach. I'm not looking for a NOS or show condition tach, but rather than needs to be reconditioned. I plan on rebuilding the tach for my '66 Mustang and attaching it to the dash...Any leads would be appreciated.

I have a picture of one in my gallery. Is this the one your looking for? You will find them on ebay once in a while and they normally fetch $200.00 + and may or may not work. Tony Branda makes an exact replica which is listed on their site. The original Faria tachs are "series" tachs that wire direct to the + side of the coil with a break in that wire at the ign switch. One wire ground and one for the light.
Hope this helps and good luck

Wayne;

I have the same tach is my 66 GT-350 "re-creation" fastback, bought it thru Branda some 10 to 11 years ago, be aware, they DO NOT work with MSD or the Ford Duraspark ignitions, had to send mine to Germany to have it changed over for MSD/electronic ignition, cost's about the same as the tach did when I bought it, but it does look and work great sitting up there on the dash..............

David, I rebuild old tachs and the old Farias will work with MSD/Duraspark if you use the MSD tach adapter #8920. With the tach adapter, you can wire up current triggered (+ side of coil) or voltage triggered (-side of coil) I have done so with several Farias/Rotunda tachs, all of which are current triggered.
Hook up the current triggered to the red wire coming out of the tach adapter and the voltage triggered to the violet wire. By the way, Brandas are voltage triggered (-side of coil). Either way you go, you're right, they do look cool on the old Fords!!
Hope this helps

Mark;

I'm not sure if mine was what you would call "old", it was a reproduction of the original 65/66 GT-350 Shelby tachs.....It worked fine when I was still using the old points distibutor, but after a couple of years I decided to upgrade to an MSD ignition system and contacted MSD about it and they researched it and said it would have to have a new circuit and at the time (mid 90's) they only knew of one company in Germany that would do the job..........

The repro tachs of today should be compatable with all that by now....... All I know is I ended up spending a bunch of money bewteen the initial purchase and upgrade, but now, I do not regret it.....

Goober,
I assume because my Faria tach is "inline" and it's needed for the car to run when the ignition switch is in the "on" position, I'll have to use a jumper wire to make the connection so the car will run in the absence of the tach which is now wired in circuit behind the 8920 which is fed out of the MSD 6AL I have..correct?

Wayne, go to the MSD website and look up instructions for the MSD tach adapter. A diagram is there to so you can see what you need. Basically, the 12v wire from your tach is bewteen your ign switch and MSD 6 box. The pickup tach wire goes into the red wire coming out from the tach adapter.
Hope this helps
