need a 351 cleveland engine
hey guys, i am looking for a 351 cleveland motor to replace the one that is in a lift truck owned by my company. the guys that work for me, wizards that they are, tested a new concept called running the truck 4 qts low of oil and with no water in the radiator. it didn't pan out very well. so i am lookinf for a half way decent 351 cleveland motor. all it has to do is run half way decent. this is a 1980 ford utility truck with a boom lift on the back. basically it is an e350 dually. it looks like a fors van front, with a utility box back. but would it be a 351, a 351 modified or a 400? it has 8 bolts on the valve covers like the 351's do. but would they have made a standard 351 in 1980. i thought not. any advice?

I would think that it would be a 351M (modified) or possibly a 400. They use the Cleveland head and are in that same family of engines. They are VERY common at any boneyard as most Ford trucks of the later 70's and early 80's used that engine along with most Broncos. These engine are inexpensive and not rare like the Clevelands, so good luck with your search. Jim

I have several 351Cs,but you need a 351M or 400. If you want a little more a 460 will bolt up to the same bellhousing.

No 351C's in Ford trucks, just 351M/400's. M's and 400's are a dime a
dozen. Unless there are tags or stickers on the M or 400, you would have to pull the pan and check the crank ID because the M and 400 are identical externally and the only difference is the crank and pistons. thanks to all who answered my post. you have all been very helpful. i have located a couple engines..351M and 400's...just need to see exactly what i have in the truck. will run some #'s i think it has a C4 trans..want to make sure it will bolt up with M or 400.

As stated before, the 351M/400 has a big block bellhousing pattern different from the small block C. If you want to use the C4 with a 351/400 you will need a C4 aluminum bellhousing which is different from a C6. They are on Ebay if you don't have one or only have a C6 bell available.
