Where can I get a cobra registered as a 1965 car?

I'm thinking about purchasing a cobra that is currently registered in CA as a 2005 SPCN vehicle. If I purchase the car, does anyone know of a state where I could title and register it in as a 1965-66 cobra? The engine is a 1966 427. Thanks!

If the cobra has an existing title it would have to be registered in the year the title states.

Otherwise, you could purchase one that is already registered as a 1965.

If it wasn't already titled it would be registered as a 1965( or whatever year vehicle it replicates)in Illinois on the title. It was part of the NSRA registration move and was instituted in Illinois about 2002, we were the first ones to use it. Since it is already titled/registered I think you are stuck. There are more states implementing the NSRA style titling/registration procedure now, but again that is when the title is first applied for.

Gotta get one already titled as a 1965. I'm thankful every time I sit in mine for this! It makes trips to the DMV A LOT easier!! Good luck.

Mine is registered as a 1965 Ford Convertible here in Pennsylvania.

Arizona titles replicas as the year they represent. Been that way forever here. Simple way to deal with the fact these do not meet the rules for new cars.

Even if it has already been titled in CA as a 2005?

Yes. You won't be able to change the year

The real questions is, what state do you reside in, as not all states have a way for you to title/register a car if you are not a full time resident.

Theres a reason why most states dont do that anymore........
its called TAXES.....
if the car is licensed and registered as a SPCN in
California then it should have an SB-100 number
and be smog exempt.....
the state wants their money....dont try to cheat them out of it
they will come looking for you.

ItBites 11-17-2010 02:47 PM

I'm pretty sure they changed the title date from the old Texas title when I titled the car here in 2003. I think texas had it titled as a 2000 or something...

Isn't it possible to get a car retitled to fit the registration laws of another state? I think Oregon may allow this with a highway patrol inspection. I know a car owner that was able to get a year change done with documentation, although this was not a kit car.

Reminds me of the time the DA sent prize notice to wanted felons and when they all showed up to collect- busted.
