Almost time for the SB100 dash

Who's got the best links to explain EXACTLY what to do?

This one is pretty good but old:

That link looks very good.

Interestingly enough I don't think anyone can tell you exactly what you need to do, becaue the DMV doesnt know and so they are all acting just a little differently.

For example I took all of my paperwork to the DMV this morning and had a chat with them to make sure I had everything I needed to get an SB100 in January. I'm all set. However, a friend who is in process of building his SPF that I went with, was told that he MUST visit the CHP for verification and VIN before he could get his SB100 sequence number. This is not consistant with anything I've read before, but that was their story and they were sticking with it.

I would suggest you make a visit to your DMV and have a friendly discussion with them. Try to find a time of day when they are not swamped and spend some time to build even just a little good will, you never know when you might need it!

Good luck to all of us on Jan 2nd.

Here is what I know from my DMV..and he has done it for over 20 years...........
1. go get your paperwork done, pay your fees and get the receipts, Cert or ORig. together...(which you best have anyway B4 you hit DMV
2. Now, here is the part that confuses....but pretty sure it is right..
you can either go to CHP and get the VIN stamped, or wait till after Jan2, when you will be waiting for your SB100 number.
3. after you have your Sb100, then you go to CHP,(if you did not go there aleady).
4. then you go to BAR
5. then you go to brake and lite
6. Finally,........now you go to DMV and get the thing finalized with plates........
It is pretty much that way........some say you need to get the CHp first, but I just went to CHP and they, along with the guy at DMV..said that the chronology of that is not necessary.....
hope that helps.............

I did mine 2 years ago and this was not the case for me. I did everything after I got the sequence number. I did not need a brake/light test at all. I don't know if the DMV forgot or just wasn't needed. -Bob

As RandyRosenberg has told me/us, it VARIES so wildly across California that the concensus has been, there's no consistancy, other than the fact they will ALL take your money. Thank god some things don't change.

Having said that, my horror story was based around the VIN. At the DMV, I did not have my "LEGAL" VIN, but I substituted my "Serial Number" from FFR. Well, that came back to bite me in the end. I would recommend that you tow your SPF or whatever, to a CHP to get the VIN applied. The car does NOT need to be "running" to get a VIN, however, they are looking for major components such as the transmission, engine and possibly rear-end. Of course the MSO from the manufacturer of the body/chassis.
Of course if it's "drivable", it's recommended you get your TOP first. Otherwise, you may also get a ticket from the CHP on top of the VIN as odd as that might sound.

If you cannot get the VIN this week, well, you'll have to put on your most patient and puppy-eyed game face on, and convince the clerk it must remain blank until the CHP issues the VIN. Remember, the clerks only get this weirdness once a year, and while 500 SPCNS registration spots sounds like a lot, California contains millions of people so it's a very tiny percentage from the DMV's perspective so cut them some slack. If you've waited in line as often as I have (6 times) you can see some very angry people with elevated voices talking to both the clerk and the supervisor. All I can do is humor them and let them know their job is appreciated and who knows? Maybe you'll get better cooperation on your registration.

Good luck to all you. I'm just freakin' glad I'm done this year. It was a bit of hell.

How detailed do the build receipts that you bring to the DMV have to be? I'm looking at a demo SPF that is located at a Superformance dealer that is out of state.

The car has never been titled and it won't be a problem getting seperate receipts for the rolling SPF chassis and the motor/transmission installation. Would the DMV also require a separate receipt for the motor, trans, etc.?

Just wondering whether the two reciepts (1. SPF dealer for chassis 2. installer for engine/trans/labor) would meet the DMV's criteria for a SPCN.

i have tring to get my plates for a year now , got my sb100 and smog exsemption sticker from the bar and the chp checked the vin number stamped by the manufacturer but..... the dmv wants the 124 form with a re-assigned vin number in stead of the chp verified man. vin number. So make sure you get the new reassigned vin number first or be prepared for more hassels and more money and time wasted. Oh i forgot the dmv wants $611.00 more in addition to the $1041. i allready paid. the fun never ends !!!!! good luck all.

I would think you should be covered. I didn't have nearly all of the receipts I could have (car wasn't finished when I got my sb100). However, have the major ones (chassis, tranny, motor etc) and add the apropriate amount into a section for items not accounted for otherwise. I don't recall what that section was titled, but it will be obvious. That section totaled about $ 5K in my case.

Just don't try to be "cute" when you give them the total cost. The state wants it's "fair" share of the taxes, but otherwise, you should be fine.

Good luck!!

Am I to understand that the VIN number asked for on the top of DMV's Form 343 should not be the manufacturer's chasis number, e.g., CSX 4XXX?
