Another CA registration Question
Looking at my options for my build.. I have heard..that you can register a cobra kit in CA with a 60's motor as long as the motor smogs to the year of the motor.. Like I said i have heaRD OF THIS BUT HAVE TALKED TO MANY OWNERS AT SHOWS AND HAVE NOT RUN INTO ONE THAT HAS PERSUED THIS ROUTE TO REGISTER. Has anyone done this? How do you obtain a VIN #. ANY ADVISE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Just do a search here for SB100 and you will find out all the gory details. You register the car as SPCNS (special construction) and then have to get it to pass smog. SB100 (if you can get it) will exempt the car from smog testing.

cheesehead,
The process is the same regardless of SB100 or trying to pass smog. I took my car in and tried to pass while waiting for Jan2 to get SB100. I've got a Roush 427R, which is a 351w Dart block. My smog referee tested it based as a '69 351, which is the first year in their books for a 351. I failed miserably. At least double the allowable emmisions, no heat riser, and the carb wasnt on the 'green' list of approved carbs. If you are going with a mild motor I think a 351 could pass. an early 289 or FE would be easier you shouldnt need the heat riser going into the carb, but they will still make you pass the tail pipe sniffer. Not impossible, but you'll need a fairly mild motor. Oh its my understanding that regardless of the year of the motor (say for example a 62) you still have to pass a sniffer test. If the block is older they will use the first year on the books I think that's 65, but not positive. Daryl |
Thanks
That's great info. I'll go for the sb-100 or move to asia..

In past years, you could take a pre 1975 block to the Bar every 2 years and they'd let it go based on the year of the motor. According to Morgester (state attorney that visits this site), the Bar will no longer be doing that. Instead, they will base it on the year you built the car. It's better to 1) leave this freaking socialist state or 2) get a SB100 number.
