sorry if this is a repeat question
I live in California and bought a kit car that was originally built in 1993 and had previously been titled as a 1993 Special Constructed vehicle in another state.
On Jan 2, 2008 I received an SB100 exemption from the DMV after paying use tax & registration fees. i am still awaiting my BAR letter. i had the vehicle at the DMV on 1/2/08 but they chose not to look at it and simply estimated my fees based on the paperwork I showed them (bill of sale, title, previous state's registration documents). I am getting a little worried about all the posts regarding CA rejecting registration papers of kit cars. is there anything more I must do to finalize this car's registration in California? |
If you received your SB-100 exemption and your title has SPCN on it you should have no worries. That is why they passed SB-1578 so people could get their cars registered when they brought them in from other states. The only problem was they also use the same piddly 500 numbers that everyone else is trying to get. Also my Title (Pink Slip) shows 0000 under Yr. Model. As for the BAR test, I think you have to make an appointment. But as long as you have the SB-100 papers that is no problem. Just carry your registration and maybe a copy of the title in the car and if you get stopped the police can radio in your license number when they see the SPCN and the DMV will verify that you are legal. If you haven't finished the process and gotten the title yet, then you should get busy and do it.

You may also need to get a CHP inspection (likely) and possibly a Brake and Lamp inspection (I did, many dont). All these are things you need to schedule. The DMV can give you the phone number of the CHP offices to schedule that inspection, and they will give you some paperwork that the officer inspecting the vehicle needs to fill out and sign. You got the hard part done just getting the sequence number :) Daryl |
Good info above,
BTW you do not have to have the SB100 sticker on the car. If the title, CHP vin number, brake/light inspection are done and registration are done properly the car carries the SPCN designation for its entire life. TR |
In order to schedule the BAR appointment, he will need the SB100 certificate/paperwork that he doesn't have yet or at least I thought.

Yes you have to have recieved the SB100 paper back in the mail before scheduling CHP or BAR.

tmctguer, I've found 'xlr8or' to be one of those most knowledgable people on this site, especially as it relates to entire registration and SB100 process.

sb100
I have done the CHP VIN inspection and the brake/lamp. The CHP saw the out-of-state assigned VIN and said it was good to use. I had acquired the original MSO and registration doc's from 1993 via public records DMV searches. The CHP really liked seeing the documents which authenticated the VIN.
I called BAR and they confirmed I must wait until BAR doc's arrive before scheduling my smog test. I believe it should arrive any day based on the postings on this board. Thanks for the replies. |
