Colorado Registration Experience
I'd sent in in late Jan for my personalized collector plate - I got SPRSNAK. We have to pass emissions (Front Range, i.e. Denver/Boulder areas) but only once. Then we get a renewal every 5 years but don't have to do emissions again. My emissions an engine running problems are documented elsewhere. After I passed I went to get my plate. The really cute lady soon figured she was in over her head and passed me to the office manager. I had to do the following makeups:
1. The VIN Verification form was not filled out correctly (stuff in the wrong boxes). She even made the corrections and told the sheriff what to do. 2. I had to get it weighed at a commercial scale. A stone yard down the road charged me $3 and oggled it. 3. I had to get a MSRP statement from Shelby since they had no records. They wanted to ding me for the $560K of an average 1965 Cobra 427 from the "book" [that is what the title says] but I explained this was a continuation series. "Oh, a kit car". Kind of but not strictly. She told me to get a MSRP for the roller off the internet. Done, I have all the forms and will try again this week. |
Make sure that it gets titled as a kit car. It may hurt your pride, but you'll save some money and have fewer hassles.

When they figured it on the info I gave them (weight was 2300 instead of 2630) they gave me an estimated 5 year registration of $250. $50/year for 5 years all paid up, no more emissions as long as I own it, I'm happy :) |
I got it!
I shagged: 1. The corrected VIN verification form (required for all registrations originating out of state - the VIN on the title has to be verified. When I showed the sheriff's deputy the VIN plate she was amazed. But they filled out the form wrong. The (county equivalent of) the DMV even marked the corrected version). 2. I had to get it weighed - my CSX4005LA(427) is 2630lb. 3. They needed a MSRP. An email from SAI was good enough. Here is the plate: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...e/046ec0b1.jpg I went to hook it up to the rear but the bolts were too short to attach it now that I have the real plate instead of the dealer's sticker. My local hardware store will fix that in the morning but I'm all giddy ! |
It looks even better on the car:

How does it look on the front? ;)

Ha ha! Colorado says you're supposed to have front plates but I've never seen a Cobra with them. In fact I've never put my plate on my SGT either. They are in the trunk. Good question though - does anyone make a removable front plate holder/frame? |
Finish Line products:
There are probably more, but I've looked at these two. (Only had to dig my front plate out from under the seat once - scrapped the heck out of the back of my hand!) http://www.finishlineaccessories.com...b5ae5453bd27de Performance Unlimited: http://performanceunlimited.com/cobr...nseframes.html Terry |
I use a front plate on mine. CO says you need one, so I do. Not a big deal, IMO. Got mine from Mike's Cobra Parts (or something like that).

It seems odd to me that everyone I knew that went through this process seems to have a different experience. You had to have the car on a scale? I am guessing that is b/c it was brought into this state?? I personally was hoping for a collector plate b/c I know folks that have built FF5 cars that have them, but in the end they wouldn't do it for me. I guess it means less hassle but still would have like to have them. Hope to see you at one of the gatherings this year.
