Foam based buck
 

I just noticed a builder's buck (username jberg) based on plywood cutouts and foam. Anybody have information on this build technique?

Plus, who sells plans for profiles? (427)

Nobody I know of sells full size profiles, its all down to having a good eye for stuff & lots of patience , unless you have access to a fancy electronic copy machine etc ( I dont have the patience to learn the skills reqd for that or the $$$ to pay someone who thinks they do!!!).

The foam? you guys in the states have access to most types, I use the high density styro stuff they put on houses. Only down side is having to use epoxy for the first layup over the top ( anything with ...esters in it kills styro ).

If I have to do another ( & it looks like I will need to do a couple more :) ) I will try doing expanded alloy mesh stapled over ply/mdf formers, then push/shrink the mesh into the shape I want before a layer of glass & filler to final shape.

Lots of other variations on how you can do it, & others might have better setups.

I have some first hand expierence of that tech and don't recomend that for anyone ;-)

Ozgur didn't use stryrofoam for his buck and if I ever start again to build a buck again I will do it like Ozgur made his buck for slabside mold.

I have made a set of drawings (for alu body buck purpose) and have sent those to few peoples but I don't know have anyone build buck using those. I may sent those to you in pdf-format if you like to use those but remember that nobody know how near of origin shape those are or what chassis that body could be added.

If you build buck starting from these drawings I recomend that you made 1/2" plywood cutouts and just add thin plywood stripes layer (like Ozgur did) + one layer of glass matt. Some bondo/primer layers is need before you may sanding it to final shape but these are needed anyway no mater how you made buck.

If you anyway like to use foam in top layer (even I don't like that idea) and like to get good resuld you should have temp controlled space where you made foam buck because foam expand/schrik a lot if temp/humidy change and plywood don't change so much. Those cut outs "print trough" nex day even you get it fine Today if temp change (I add several bondo layer to buck but even that those cutouts print trough).

If you (or anyone here) like to use same tech for some other car model I may also explain more about how I made those plywood cutout drawings etc.

Ps. That buck what I made was used as a part of "small campfire" and it burn wery well, so no more new pic available from that;-)

I know of one person who tried using a mostly foam buck and the body came out all messed up. It was so bad he had to destroy it. I think he finally made his buck from plywood and something else.

They use big styrofoam cubes in construction here in California. You'll see a big rig running down the highway every so often stacked full of 48"x48"x96"blocks of the stuff. I think I'd go the plywood route.

Ozgur, you once sent me some files and no matter what I used to see the sections, I just could not get it to work. I am interested in files that show the plywood sections, of course! So if you can, then yes. I just need to know what to view them on. Thanks!

When I transfer cad drawings to plywood I made first pdf's and sent those to printing shop (pdf's are easier to handle/share that cad files). I use to mark one measure to each drawing so that I could check that those are correct scale affter plotting. I use 1:1 scale in drawings so it was easy to transfer those to plywood.

There should be some archive here in scratch build page where we could save some files like pdf's for body buck or chassis drawings. Archive could be one kind of "opensource cobra" archive so that anyone can add and use info what there is.
