FE motor position
Can someone please measure from the original chassis to the crankshaft pulley bolt to tell how high a FE engine sites above the chassis?
I remember vaguely having rested the engine front sump on a 3/4" bar across the main rails. |
Nobody?
I position everyhing on monday. You can even post the height in inches ;-) |
Motor Mount Location
I have a 427 frame (4" round tube - exact knockoff of an original frame) that I am just getting ready to install the early motor mount brackets on (the ones that use the early hipo 289 mounts). I can make some measurements on my frame and a 427 tunnel port motor I have sitting on a stand in my shop if that would help.

That wold be perfect!
I welded the transmission mount and place the drivetrain from there. I don't need the position of the mounts, just the height of the front of block above frame. Preferably from crankshaft CL down, or any alternative measurement like block underside without pan. The angle defined in the CR drawings would give me that value, but a fraction of a degree off would result in an error of 3/8 or 1/2 easily, which I cannot afford. I could calculate it, but reading with tape measure is so much more "old school" :-) All the measurements I took from the first 3 cars are gone. |
I built one car where the motor was about 3/4" too low and don't know remember if the following readings were from that car (poor document control...):
Top of chassis to front of block to oil pan rail (without pan): 2" Top of chassis to crankshaft centerline: 4 11/16" I did say in earlier that I remember a 3/4" square tube between oil pan and chassis, which would have been the lower engine? |
120mm (almost 5") crank CL above chassis.
60mm (2 3/8") between transmission mount and box. That should clear the transmission to x-member and starter kickout to frame. It appears that the 351W starter sits lower than the FE, hitting the chassis? |
