Chrome Paint
Has anybody painted their Cobra Chrome? It runs about $1,300 a gallon. I wonder how it holds up.

We at work looked very hard into that "spray on chrome". We tested a few parts and I got some stuff for my personal use out of it...

The problem is the UV rays of the sun - that discolor the paint after a while to a kinda yellowish. Just over a year, indoor parking and 10K miles Chrome plating compare to the spray on is very expensive, thus no one (like in the automotive industries) uses this method. They still, like plastic parts, mist the part with copper and chrome plate them. |

Chrome, but not...
Have you considered ceramic coatings? The coating is not "Chrome" but it's aluminum and ceramic particles in a coating which is heat treated. It's used for side pipes. I coated my side louvers and they look more "Chrome" than the photo above which is discolored. Of course it's not chrome. It can be polished to a high luster which can be close to chrome finish. The look is more like polished aluminum. It's an inexpensive approach to "Chrome plating".

If you can find somebody that does it, I have seen many wheels powder coated chrome. They look awesome. I've seen a set of Corvette wheels right next to each other where one was real chrome and the other powder coated chrome. The powder coated looked better, although the reflection wasn't as clear as the regular chrome.
A friend of mine worked at a place that refurbished wheels. They sent them to a place called Transmotion in California if I recall to have them powder coated. They had black chrome powder coat which was really awesome. |
I e-mailed the company that chrome painted the Blue Angle tribute mustang....said they would chrome paint my Mk3 for $35,000!!!!!!!! :JEKYLHYDE

I'm a body man and I can tell you they make spraying it easy, but it's not. Your gun & spraying & technique has to be perfect. The type of chemical for cleaning the panels and the cleaning process, as you can imagine,...also has to be perfect, more so than any other process. Although I've never sprayed the chrome, I would love to. The raspberry tint on the Mustang is beautiful. :cool:
