Cobra Chassis measurements
I’m keen to start to fabricate my own Cobra chassis but I have no measurements to begin with. I’m mainly looking for the main chassis beams specs i.e the length and distance apart they are. I want to use 4” round tube and I will be using Jag front and rear suspension with a 429 BBF engine. I have tried looking it up on the internet but haven’t come across much. I hope you guys with experience can help me out.

I will post in this forum. But may I ask why it’s a better forum to post this question?

Cobra Restorers offers or offered a full set of chassis plans a few years ago.

This may be way more than you are looking for....
Construction Drawings - 427 Cobra https://www.chuckcobra.com/construct...awings-04.html |
Hey there,
I can also highly recommend Chuck's drawings, I am using a set myself for a 289 build. He has done a tremendous amount of work on these, check them out. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. If you really are not concerned about originality then check out fasterpatricks build http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/scra...tom-cobra.html There are some great ideas there! So just get yourself some 4" tube, set them about 21" apart on the table and get to work. :):) |
I like Chucks.....
Way worth the $, if the funds come hard you may want to rethink this whole adventure as I know what it costs to do this from scratch....... :) Remember, Cobra parts are regular priced parts x 5... :D |
I found Chuck’s website last night and I’m going to contact him about his drawings. Plus the idea of building my Chassis of an original car is an opportunity that appeals to me.

Great to hear feedback on Chuck’s drawings. It was a question I asked myself “ how detailed are they for the money his asking” so reading that your using them for your car is great.

At some point someone was selling bluepints to build a cobra chassis and there were some errors in the prints, nothing that could not be ground off or cut off and rewelded. But they were there I can't remember who, although there are not that many who offer those buleprints.

Greetings Cooper.
I see that you're located in WA (Australia, not US). Are you in touch with the local Cobra Club? The Perth guys/gals visited us here in Adelaide several years ago; they're a nice group. Anyway, information from a club local to you could be beneficial regarding registration requirements. I mention that because building your own chassis to emulate the original Cobra's chassis might cause extra problems with compliance at road registration time. If you contact your state registration guys - they are the people who will check your car's compliance for road registration - that would be a good idea with you building your own chassis. Best of luck, and please post updates here often :D Cheers! Glen |

My Arntz Cobra was designed and built by Ron Butler who was a fabricator and crew chief for Carroll's race team. It is built with a lot of extra strength. After more than 30 years of work on my car and studying every other Cobra, I have another answer.
Check out the DAX Cobra built in England. Their frame allows the seats to set lower which would be very nice since my head is above the windshield. Their suspension setup is unique and much better than any other race car at maintaining tires camber angle through curves. RS |
