Motor Mounts
 
I know the Cobra Restorers' drawings are designed around the 427FE motor.
Do the motor mounts locate in the same location when using a small block or do they need to be relocated?
I'm using a 351/393 stroker and need to get my motor mounts welded in, but my measurements don't seem to be coming out right for transmission mount location, etc...
Some of you guys must be using a small block?

The drawings I have give the motor position by the crank centreline. That should be the same method for you. I'll check those numbers for you when I get back into the shop.

Nick,

I have the centerline dimensions, I need the front to back dimension. I'm not sure the motor mounts on the 351 are the same location on the block as they are on the 427 and what distance the motor needs to be set back from the front crossmember centerline.
Obviously, this will affect weight bias as well as locating the transmission mount, shifter location, driveline length, etc...
After measuring with the CR location, I come up with approx. 15" driveline, which seems long? However, I'm not versed enough to know for sure and don't want to make a major mistake at this stage.

Hi Bob, the CR prints give a dimension to the back of the block which is likely what you are after if your using the same tranny. The motor mounts on your motor I believe through bolt front to back with a saddle where the FE's use a stud that goes down through a plate. I'll get that number on the back of the block if I can figure where everything is between shop, computer, book shelf and work........?????

Just a suggestion,,,,
It has been my expierence, to set the engine in place with your hoist, but when you hang it, hang it with more rear weight.
Then, when you are close, put a floor jack under the bell housing and raise and lower both the engine hoist and or the floor jack.
This will enable you to set your oil pan height, hood clearence, and front to rear measurements.

Thanks, I have the measurements for the height of the motor mounts and have actually fabbed them up. However, I am wondering where the front to back measurement for the motor mounts is located as this will affect where everything lines up.

I assume the 427 has a different location on the block for the motor mounts, but I'm not familiar enough with them to be sure. This would place my 393 either more forward or rearward, depending on the differences in the motor mounts (not the motor perches on the frame.) I consider this to be a fairly critical location since it controls much of the other items on the build- firewall location, shifter, transmission mount, etc.... not to mention weight bias.

My motor mounts are the Energy suspension type with the poly pads and a 14 MM stud mount. I need to drill my motor perches for the stud location and weld the perches in place once I determine the location of the engine block. The end of block measurement should be perfect for my purposes if you can find it. I've never seen that particular measurement on the CR plans, but I will look again to see if it is there. Like much on the CR plans, you have to know the code to unravel some of the information. Now where did I put my secret decoder ring? :)

Oh yea, then you fab your mounts to fit where you need your engine. This makes a perfect job.

Back of block to front axle centreline is 32.5" or 32.75" from the centre of the subassembly. It is angled down towards the rear at 2.5 deg from the horizontal. That looks like a good project Bob! You're all set up for the rear arms.

Hey guys my B&B was originally set up for my 302 that I started with however I wanted more. I took my Cobra back to Barry at B&B and he cut my old motor mounts out and installed the new FE motor mounts. SAME LOCATION on the rails the only difference was the the Small Block mounts were actually 1 1/4" taller. I recently switched from a 428 CJ to a 1963 427 centeroiler and had to change those mounts as well because of the older FE engines (pre 1967) only used two bolts on the block where as the later 390, 427 and 428 FE engines use a three bolt to the block configuration.

Good luck with your motor mounts. I hope this helps someone.

I wonder,
if using the existing location, one can cut the top of the FE mount off and make a shoe to slide over the remaining bracket adapting 351 or FE or 460.

this shoe could then be drilled for two bolts all the way through to hold it in place.

that way any engine could sit there providing the bellhousing to motor mount distance is similar.

like a RR Merlin V12 or even a Chevy... ;-)

there is a line in the drawing giving you block reference (bellhousing to block) 2' 8 1/2" to axle centerline.

right next to it, 6 1/8" from chassis CL, is an angle of 2.5 deg (2 deg 30min = 2.5 deg).
extend that line and you find your crankshaft CL heigth to chassis.
work on 5" ground clearance.
maybe a little more in the rear.

the 2.5 deg should actually correspond with the 1.5 deg for the trans mount, if they are in line.
that part I don't understand.

using a rubber trans mount probably absorbs the 1 deg difference, but it doesn't feel right.

BTW, the 460 with a Victor JR intake is too high, it may work with a Performer, but the block is also too wide.
it cannot be offset by 1/2", you hit the frame with the stater.
then you need to move the steering to make room for headers.

and a clutch fork is a pain to use as well, get an hydraulic TO bearing inside the bellhousing.
