Scratch builders- steering column?
What is the best steering column for my set up?
Obviously, I'm not trying to build a completely accurate replica of an original, including the fact I'm using a small block. So, which steering column would be best for my purposes? I've seen reference to the Volkswagen units, as well as Ididit columns and a couple others. What are you guys using and what are the pros and cons? Also, what steering wheel will work with these units and how are they attached? Thanks, Bob |
The Factory Five uses the upper part of a Mustang steering shaft. It's a telescopic shaft and runs through two bearings to the coupler. There is a hub made that adapts a MotaLita wheel to the Mustang shaft.

I used a steering Column out of an 1986 Mitsubishi Mirage (I know, its japanese!!). And I bought a steering wheel from FFR, and had my own adapter boss custom made by a machinist friend.

1993 ford laser was the perfect length for me, came with two unijoints and the correct spline for my application, made my own boss and has steering lock.

I found a guy close by who has a couple 68/69 MGB steering columns for sale, along with a bunch of other stuff- including steering racks.
Will this year of column work, and what is a fair price to offer him for a column? If anyone else is looking for one, I'll pick up both of them if you're interested. If nothing else, what length column am I looking for so I know when I see one? Thanks, Bob |
Bob it is an MGA not an mgb if my memory serves me correct. The last one we built was with solid 3/4 stock, bearing at either end with an aluminum tube for the column. all parts were borgeson except the aluminum tube and bearings.They do have a web site we were able to weld a quick release at the steering wheel end and use borgeson adapters and splined shafts at the other all the way to a manual mustang rack. On the originals it uses an mg rack and the a column doesnt have the key and directional stuff at the other {early style} is just a steal tube with bushings at either end and a 3/4 shaft with splines on the bottom and threads for a bolt at the wheel end. The directional is still the early volkswagon. I hope this helps with out being to long winded.

The old VW column works very well....same switch some of the Cobras used and it is compact and easily mounted to the chassis. Parts are readily available and Borgeson sells ujoints ready to go.

I think 67 and earlier...just find one that does NOT have the ign switch on the column itself.

I found one but it looks like the bottom end is under the gas tank. Does anyone know if the tank fits in a hole or does it have a floor under it?

Hey Bob, I'm told the tank exposes the bottom end of the column which will be helpful. I'll keep in touch on it but I think we're gonna find it's just a tube with two bearings and a shaft that we'll probably want to change to a FR or Borgeson or something.
