I really don't know that much about the Explorer stuff, though I suspect it's the same as the Mustang. Have you tried a search on FFCobra.com? I know a lot of the late Ford stuff like that has been researched.

I will be doing something similar to FFR but thier IRS is pricey and heavy. I've nearly got it down to a bolt together at costs similar to what I'd spend for a straight 8.8 by the time I got done upgradeing. I'm not concerned about fender clearance since I'll be making the fenders but since the seats are literaly between the tires I don't want to loose any track width. An offshoot of the research is I should have the info for a bolt together setup for the Cobra that is both stout and cheap. In picking up pieces for an IRS has anyone gotten a spare aluminum 8.8 housing?
