Roll bar specs...
Can anyone provide the original diameter for the roll bar on a '67 427 AC? I have seen them from 1.5 inches to 2 inches. The 1.5 looks a little small and the 2 looks a little big. Also need to know the measurement center to center, where it enters the body.
Thanks, Wayne (edatman) |
1.5" OD tubing, bent on a 6" radius (12" center to center) where it enters the body.

I've seen them made in 1.75 for the reason you're talking about. Originals were as Bob said 1.5" but make sure it's a good alloy and wall thickness. I've been making them from 1020 DOM (Drawn on mandrel(seamless)) .120" wall mechanical tubing. That's the same stuff SCCA spec for their roll cages.

arigato, xiexie, and a big thanks guys
Thanks guys... I have a friend that made his out of 1 5/8 inch chrome moly, with a 16 inch on center (too wide for my taste). My preference is to the 1 3/4 inch size with a 14 inch on center but I know pipe size and the mandrels control that somewhat.
You know of anyone that produces the 1 3/4 with a 14 inch on center??? I want the bar forward (racing) type going into the front floorboard. (Gives the passerger something to hold on to!!!) LOL  I have the equipment to finish the fabrication,... welder, chop saw, etc. just no way to bend it and later chrome plate it. edatman |
I got my pipes done to the original 12" center to center measurement in 1 3/4" DOM .134 wall. I had a place in Texas do the bending as they seemed to be the only ones I could find that could bend 1 3/4" to that radius. I also had them send the pieces for the brace and the tenons to join all the pieces together and had the legs left long so I could cut them to size and fit everything up here in my shop.
They were very quick on the turn around and their prices were very reasonable including shipping. Their website is www.peytonperformance.com Bob |
I can check on the radius dies I have available for 1.75" for you also.

Could live with...
Thanks for the link Bob. I think I could live with a 12 inch c to c and 1 3/4 inches.
Mickmate...let me know what you find please. That's been the problem locally...no one has the right size radius, though they could do 1 3/4, 1 5/8 or 1 1/2. |
I got my rollbar from Mickmate - awesome quality and a great guy to work with. Actually had two made - one in the painted legal racing tubing, and a thing of beauty made in stainless. I highly recommend Nick.

I have the dies to do 1 3/4" tube available. Let me know if you want one and I'll order tube.
|
Geez Nick,
If I had known you had the dies I would have had you do the work......;) Maybe next scratch build? :) Bob |
I may want to talk to you about dies Bob, tight radius 3/4" ;-)
|
Give me a call and we'll discuss. I don't have access to the neighbor's lathe right now, but if you have a lathe and mill ,you can make one of the same die I made in about 10 minutes.

If you must have roll bar bling, do it with stainless. Chrome plating reduces strength, unless proper annealing is done. Or so I've heard. :p Rich

Hey Mickmate. What radius' do you have for 1.75 roll bar. Can you do a 14 inch center to center?
Shoot me an email at wsmith6@cfl.rr.com. We'll talk availability and prices. Wayne (Edatman) |
Hi folks,
I'm late on to this thread but I found it by a word search. I have a few tube benders plus a whole bunch of various dies in my factory. What I don't have and require is a drawing or template to pop one off. Can anyone provide me with what I need? I am keen to the 14" c2c 1.75 seamless tube. I do notice 2 versions though. One that is a tall upright and sits a clean 90 degrees. It looks so tall that a average basketball players head sitting down wouldn't even be close. It looks wacky to me. The one I've seen and like is a lower version with a bit of a lean back, but tall enough to protect. Not sure if these versions have actual names. I would like to build one....who knows if easy enough I'll build a shhit load. |
If you're looking for a correct look they should slope back 10 deg on the hoop and be the 1.5" tube on a 6" CLR. Height should be adjusted to the driver and seat but I think runs around 14" high at the center. The guys that want the stouter look of 1.75" tube could look here http://www.clubcobra.com/classifieds...hp?product=890
