CSX4000/6000 Front Tire Size

Looking to order Avons to replace my Cooper Cobra tires on my car. My current front tires are 235x60x15 and Avon doesn't offer this size. They come in 225 or 245x60x15s. I feel pretty confident the 245s would be the way to go just wanted to see what size Avons people were running with the stock wheels. Make sure I didn't go too big and have clearance issues.

Thanks for the help!!!!

Avon 245/60s will work fine.

A comment I got from a MkIV owner a few years ago:

'225 is best compromise for handling, 245s on the front look great but can be heavy on the steering.'

I actually remember a thread where one of the Kirkham brothers said they prefer the smaller sizes front and rear, at least on their cars, for best overall ride, handling, etc. I'll never be able to find that thread though.

In this thread started by Jamo in the Kirkham Forum about Avon tires and I quoted Tom Kirkham's comment about the benefits of narrower tires:

I remember that post too, Knockers.
Gonna give it a shot next time.

I have 245's, and they steer fine for me. If the steering is too hard, maybe you have too much caster.

I would rather take wider tires up front and look cool then narrow tires in front and look like, a well, you know.

Lol!!!

I had 225s on my BDR cause 245s wouldnt clear with the offset of the 15" Vintage Wheels I purchased to replace the 18" wheels. Can't advise on the handling but no doubt the 225s looked a hair skinny up front. Guess it depends if looks vs handling is your main concern.

I'm running Avon 295X50X15 in the rear, 245X60X15 in the Front, on my early Kirkham and they work great. I know Kirkham's do not recommend those sizes, but after talking to many people, Dave Wagner being one them, that's what made my decision. My lovely wife also did the Goodyear Eagle Tredwear Lettering, no one to date had ever noticed there are Avons.

Avons are heavier than Goodyear Billboards and because of this I chose to mount Avons on Halibrand Magnesium wheels to offset the weight. Keep the Good years on Trigo aluminum wheels. Had to trim the air ducts to the front brakes for clearance and Smooth as Glass in Riverbank finished them and can't tell the ducts have been modified. FWIW
