loose in the rear
Anyone got any diagrams of the 4000 series lower rear A arm? My arm is loose where it connects to the frame. I've pulled it apart but it seems I may be missing bearings. Are there supposed to be bearing between the ball and the nuts? Help.

If its loose, something is missing for sure !!! I have a Kirkham, and I have to believe the Shelby suspension would be the same. I see three posibilities: 1, the Heim joint(rod end) outer bearing has departed, leaving the rod end loose in the joint housing. 2, the spacers on either side of the rod end are missing, or 3, the bolt that goes through the rod end that attaches it to the frame is loose in the frame attach points. Those look much larger than the diameter of the bolt, suggesting that there may be bushings inside the attach points that, if missing or worn, would allow for much slop. You didn't say if it was the front or rear attach point. I am assuming its the front. Can you give more detail, or better yet, some pics? BTW, do you know Dr Jim Taylor of Valpo? Ted Radtke |
James taylor the family doc? Know him well. The lower A arm was loose at it's attachment to the frame...it's a apart now. My question... the thru bolt was tight. the rod has two spacers that pass thru the ball are there supposed to be baring between the spacers and the ball?

Again I assume you're refering to the forward attach point, since the rear attach point is bolt & bushing as opposed to a Heim joint. The spacers you refer to are supposed to hold the ball (inner) part of the rod end solidly when the through bolt is tightened, the ball is not supposed to move. The outer portion of the rod end has a bearing surface, and it moves around the stationary ball. If the ball is not kept from moving, it does not cause looseness, but causes the ball to wear the bolt. However the ball does need to be restrained from sliding up and down the length of the bolt which is the function of the spacers. There are no bearings between the spacers and the ball. Hope this helps. As for "JT" as he was known through high school, He and I were best friends through grade and high school, and He was Best Man at my wedding back in '64. Ask him about the MG bumper/ ring incident !!!! Lost touch with him when he went to med school , but re-connected with him a couple of years ago, We're planning on visiting friends & relatives in the northern Ind. area in late Aug. Did you solve the rear suspension looseness? As for MG's, I had two 1952 TD's (not at the same time) Decided they very much lacked power, so installed a Ford 260 V8 in the second one. Stock 164HP,2bb carb, ford 3 speed OD transmission, Comet rear end (stock 4" MG wheels bolted right up to it!) This was around 1964/65. Turned 14's at the drags. It weighed about 1800#. Yep, take old British sports car, drop in small Ford V8, make lots of fun!! I guess great minds think alike !!! Best Regards, Ted |
Got the rear end tightened up....
the lower A arm frame attachment was loose. Taking it apart was easy getting it back together a different story. You can't jet the joint back together without pulling the whole mess apart.... front control arm, coil over, sway bar etc. Its all together now. The problem is the nuts with the o rings don't lock and come loose. I'll bet the MG/Ford was a scream...how's the electrical? Roland |

do you have a heim joint in there, or the bushing version? which diameter is the heim? thanks, dominik |

They are refering to a spherical rod end. Seems to me there was/is a company that made spherical rod ends names 'heim' and the name often stuck. Kind of like Xerox for the work 'copy'

yes, I mean spherical rod ends, sorry. I saw that Kirkham uses now such a rod end instead of the rubber bushing used in the 60s cars. from the drawings I guess a 5/8" is used, although Kirkham may have upgraded to 3/4" rod ends. the drawing says 19/32" for the hole...? cheers, dominik |
