Broken pin on rear hub
Anyone have to replace a broken rear drive pin? Pulled the wheels off last weekend and found one of the studs/pins broke off.

I have had this happen on two occasions only on the rear due to the torque applied to the drive pins. The pins 1/2"" O.D. are necked down for the 3/8" threads, at the neck down they are roughly .30" diameter creating a very weak link. My hubs had a shallow counterbore so that the 1/2" diameter was trapped to take the drive torque. They eventually failed.
I had one failure and figured it was a weak pin, some time later after an autocross I broke two more on the other side. I went with ARP sprint car drive pins (made in USA). They will require machine work to the hubs and wheels. They are 1/2" threads (3/4" shank) and have a full radius at the thread/shank interface, absolutely bullet proof and it doubles the strength over the weak stockers. I know the stockers work for many applications, but I look at it from a high horsepower "drag race" perspective. You won't find any 3/8" threaded axle studs!!! Good Luck |
Steve, it's all back together so no pic, but I have the broken pin on my tool box if you want to see it. Basically it's just the screw on pin, with the stud in it, broken off pretty much flush where the pin meets the hub.
