Cobra Make, Engine: Still Contemplating....

Default Cobra Newbie

(1) For a Shelby CSX 4000 series Cobra, I am looking for a real meaty front/rear tire combo that still maintains the classic look. I like the large letter Goodyears, but they are hard to find, and how do they handle? I think they are limited to 15" (which may be OK but I'd like to see some different size combos to see what the possibilities are). Is there a "tire pics" section on this site? I wish I was more computer literate!

2) I really would like to match the wider tires with Halibrand-logo wheels and knock-off spinners...but the Halibrand products on their website are a real disappoinment to an older guy who remembers the real thing. Trigo appears limited to 9.5", but can I go wider? Vintage don't look as original but come in 10.5". Thanks.

Rob,

The Goodyear billboards are not that hard to find (just limited distributors). They look very good. However, they are bias-ply and non DOT (setting aside the issues associated with bias-ply tires, I believe they grip pretty well).

Avon makes a V-rated 15" tire in sizes appropriate for Cobras (limited feedback I've heard so far on these has been very positive).

Unfortunately, 15" performance tires for Cobras are pretty limited.

Check out http://www.rogerkrausracing.com/Cobra/ for some of the different tires for Cobras.

Incidentally, it looks like you have a CSX 4000 car on order (aluminum, I'm guessing based on the CSX number). It sounds like you are considering a 17" rim? This moves you away from the "classic look" that you referenced (especially on an aluminum CSX car).

Welcome, from Carroll Shelby

Have you noticed that it's tough finding quality performance parts to build a reliable FE engine? I have and I decided to do something about it by introducing my own line of Shelby FE™ performance parts. I worked with my design staff to build the best, because my name is on them. My racing legacy with FE performance engines extends back to my race winning 427 Cobras and GT-40 Mk.IV racers that won LeMans. Three decades later, my newer Shelby FE™ parts utilize proven design refinement to create FE performance parts for the new millennium.

My catalog illustrates an overall selection of parts available, but we can supply complete engines or parts from oil pan to carburetor to build your own Shelby 427 FE™ aluminum or cast iron engine just the way you want it. Call and speak directly to our engine department with your tech questions and orders. You have my name on it.
