The Weber 48mm IDA units ran about $1,300 as an option on the Dragon Snake which was a mittful of change back then. I bought a '58 Corvette in '66 for $1,200 (pretty much the going rate).
It brings home the fact that these cars were not for the kid working part time at the local grocery store, as much as we like to think of these things as being cheap $5,000 cars. It was a high buck car in the same league as Ferrari. A decked out Competition roadster ran over $9,000 from the factory. To put it in perspective, the median household income in 1964 was probably around $7,500. People complain today, to some degree, that racing is all about money. At $9,000 per pop on a Cobra Comp. car in '64, it was all about money then, too. Don't kid yourself. God, I sound preachy. Sorry guys. Great ad, SpecialK. I am glad you put that up on the history forum. There is one I have seen of the cross ram that Remington built as a one off. They included it in an ad for the Cobra as part of the great aftermarkets goodies you could buy. That one today would be worth some $$$$. |

CAL,
You put the spin on it, my first off the shelf large spline toploader in 1965 was $87.62 still have the receipt. Came with the shifter mechanism on the side by error, counter guy said no charge. My income that year, $7855.00 GROSS. Purchased a new ford Pickup 352, Firestone Groundgrips, radio, rear bumper (remember no come with one), spare, heater, tinted windshield; $1897.00. So those were not the "good old" days like some fondly remember in the whatcha got for yo money. Grumpy |
