Thanks, Ron, for the help on the pics. Well...not exactly Shelby's but I needed a teaser for the title.
#1 is an early Holman/Moody drag car driven by Paul Norris. This was one of the first ten Mustangs shipped by Ford to H/M. Very little of the original car was left by the time H/M did the conversion to drag specs. #2 Ford employee, Dick Brannon sits in one of the first "altered" Mustang drag cars. Every weekend Brannon would ask H/M to move the front wheels forwrd, then the rear wheels forward, then the fronts again. I believe this one of the first SOHC "cammer" engines. #3 The famous Tasca Ford Funny Car driven by Bill Lawton and campaigned out of the Tasca Ford dealership of E. Providence, Rhode Island. #4 One of the early H/M Mustangs driven by Phil Bonner. This car was basically stock with a steel body and stock wheelbase. |

You make me feel old! I have fond memories of Taska Ford and Bill Lawton at Colchester, CT and Charlestown, RI in the 60s. They ran a Thunderbolt at both tracks prior to the Mustang. The Fairlane was at Lime Rock for Labor Day a few years ago. Bill Lawton has moved on. Bob |
Cammer, anyone?

In the above pic, John Holman surrounded by a bevy of SOHC "Cammer" 427s. Ford developed the engine for NASCAR to compete against the Hemi but it was ruled illegal. The cammer was re-tooled for drag racing and H/M used as their motor of choice for their Funny Cars.
Bob: These pics take me back, too. Gas Rhonda also ran a Thunderbolt before the A/Fxers. Those were the times. I think it would be appropriate to start a 60s Ford Drag Racing section. Time to round up some more pics. |

It is amazing to see all that iron out there. If there are about 20 or so as I counted them in that photo, I wonder if that fellow knew he is in a roomfull of engines worth $500,000 today.

I'll have to find the old late 60's Ford High-Performance parts price list. Seem to recall cammers were $1295.00 LIST price with choice of single or dual quads....
Put your orders in now boys! And they had a hard time selling 'em until they became popular in Top Fuel. I think the Shelby Super Snake blew a couple or three up.... Rick |

A few weeks ago on Speed channel there was a biography of Robert Yates. He worked at Holman & Moody and was there during the hey day of Fords Total Performance campaign during the early to mid sixties. During some of the archieve film footage taken in the Holman & Moody shop the rack of completed engines was in the background as the camera focused on Robert and others that were assembling a 427. During the current interview it was stated that they built and completed 4 engines daily. They were sold or leased to competing teams that did not have thier own engine program. Keep an eye out for it, I'm sure it will be replayed. Rick |
