HI LAW !!!
Thank you to post a picture of my old Le Mans No.4. This was my first Cobra I bought from Gerry Hawkridge about 15 years ago. Still in orig. paint. This car shows Gerry's quality. Yes I raced it all the time on Germanys Autobahn, you guys dont know what you're missing. This car with its small 3,5 liter Rover stage3 was going over 150miles/h , weight was less than 900KG with hardtop!! javascript:smilie(':3DSMILE:') 3d smile Gerry took the car 1992 also to Le Mans, where nice pictures where taken. Will try to get some posted! Fritz |
No. The 289 cars, as well as the Daytona Coupes all used Borg Warner T-10 4-speeds. At some point, and I don't know when that was, but the very late 289 Comp. Cars would have had the Ford Toploader and the 427 car had, intially, the TL 28 spline.
While the Grand Sport was probably capable of 180, it was a very unstable ground vehicle and I doubt that anyone ever carried that speed for any length of time. Rob Walton, who used to own one of them, told me at Elkhart Lake, that the car was pretty unstable at 150 mph. He subsequently sold it. Beautiful car but they were no match for the Daytona Coupe. |
The only 5 speed Ford racers of the era were the GT40s which had ZF 5 speed transaxles. The 427 engined cars (Mk IIs, etc. ) went back to 4 speeds with transaxles using top loader internals.
The aerodynamics of the roadsters are indeed poor. My old 427 developed enough front end lift at 135+ that the steering became noticeably lighter. I'm sure that any owner of a replica that has pushed for big numbers has experienced this. |
The T-44 transmission used in the Ford GT, which Marco referred to in his previous post, was a very reliable unit, despite its incredible weight of 150+ lbs.

The 1963 Le Mans Cobra, 39PH, was timed at 167mph on the Mulsanne straight, and was not highly tuned, giving less than 300BHP if memory serves.
Fritz.... you beat me to it identifying the Hawk. Damn, it looks good!!!! Have a look at the Hawk Cars website, here. Law. Googling for Cobras will consume your entire life!!! Search through the forums here and ask anything you need! Nik. |
CSX3019 did indeed race in Europe during the 1966 season, owned by Ed Freutel. Sold that car and his road 427 to John Tojeiro for £1000....!! He then sold them to John Woolfe for £1000 each - he thought he had pulled a pretty sharp deal at the time. He's had many years to curse his mistake.

Ironic timing for that post, Trevor. Such a shame.
I`ve still got a set of sparkplugs from one of the John Woolfe Cobras... he took them out of his car and gave them to my dad who was having troubles one race. |
Cobra Race History
There was a very good show on the history of Carroll Shelby a few weeks ago on Speed Channel. Perhaps it will come on again.

CSX 3013 also competed in Europe. It was purchased by Georges Filipinetti for his Scuderia Filipnetti. I have only found evidence that it competed a few times - mostly hillclimbs and that sort of thing. There are a small handful of pictures and more info in the Scuderia Filipinetti book. Red car with standard Filipinetti stripe, Filipinetti crest, and car number. I don't have my registry in front of me, but it had the oil filler cap on the right front fender.
Does anybody have any pictures of the other European cars in competition? Steve |
Speaking about vettes, I also have a pic of Doug Hooper and his crew standing in front of his Corvette...they were all wearing Cobra shirts. Just had to point that out. LOL
Please continue. This is very interesting reading guys, and thanks for the info. Greg |
Greg,
I've heard about the sense of humour of a lot of the Vette guys back then - just as much fun as the Cobra guys! I've seen a pic of the Krause 63 Vette at Riverside or Santa Barbara (IIRC) and the thing has a Cobra sticker on the roof right above the drivers window! Think we would ever see an Aston Martin sticker on the Corvette C6R at LeMans? Steve |
