Episode 3

1964 Cobra:

Shelby produced two versions of the Cobra, the 427 cubic-inch and the 289, and it’s obvious which car has the higher value today. Although the 427-powered cars sell for more, there’s something to be said for an original 289 Cobra. There were only 455 289 Cobras built, each selling for a price of $5,995. The car used a mere 271 horsepower to move its 2020 lbs body from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. It covered the quarter mile in just under 14 seconds.

For someone who got in at the start of the Cobra legend, it has proved to be a great investment and the same can be said about someone who purchased a Cobra as little as four or five years ago. The average auction value of these cars has shot through the roof, going from as little as $167,000 in 2003 to more than $800,000 in 2006. This car rightfully receives an “A” on the Sports Car Market Collectability Scale.
