Adam Carolla is doing domestic Top Gear show
Adam Carolla is hosting a domestic verison of Top Gear the BBC program. He hasn't starting final filming because he lacks a co-star (I'd apply but am too slow on the quick-draw pitter patter). Maybe someone that knows him can suggest he do a segment on Cobras/Shelbys instead of all the Eye-talian tin he is so enamored of. I hope his show is as outrageous as the Brit version. I remember on one of the Brit episodes where they tried to destroy an old Toyota truck and lit it on fire, dropped it in the ocean and smashed it and the SOB still ran once they made some rudimentary repairs.
PS you can download the British shows but I don't know enuff about computers to tell you how. |
With the track record of American remakes of Brit shows...like NBC doing 'Coupling' a few years back; all I can say is I can't wait....no....really.
It seems that whenever they try a re-do here they dumb it down so far it's blatantly obnoxious. I can see Corolla making the 'Man Show on Wheels'. |
Now heard that it's going to be called Gear
And that Jerry Seinfeld (sp?) wants to be the host. I can't see him and Adam getting along. Seinfeld has so much money he could dominate Adam who makes just a couple million a year. Besides Jer might be contemptful of all but Porsches. I agree with the last commenter, American translations of British shows never seem to get it quite right, the British Top Gear is positively over the top

Who would be the U.S. Stig? :)
|
oh god no. BBC pls. do not do this.
|
I'd give this show a second thought if someone with prior race experience coupled with a large collection of cars hosted the shows, much of the reason Jermy Clarkson is afforded some respect is his history. Atleast, we could "believe" some of what is said and enjoy the smart-@ss comments to boot. I'll wait and see...but my hopes are not high.
And get someone like Jeff Gordon, Mario or Michael Andretti to be the stig...;) |
I don't think this will work.
Corolla is too crude. Need someone with more finesse. Jerry's voice is too annoying. WHO MAKES THESE CARS? And he is too big of a star. The guy from AFV would be a good co-host but why leave a successful gig? Maybe a side job. :) Kenny Wallace as one of the host? He is some what funny and has driven fast before but I don't know how credible he is.:p |
Clarkson was saying recently that a version of the show was discussed for the USA but it would be impossible to recreate the mayhem as it would not go down well with the 'non-auto' American folk - they would not understand the underlying premise that it is meant to be anti-social, non-PC and a total send-up of everything and everyone... And the fact they barely escaped from the southern states with their lives kinda proves the point!! (Was that programme ever shown over there?? I rather hope not)

Glad you liked it - I think they are still in therapy....!! :-)

This would be like "Iron Chef America" It just doesn't have the same appeal.
Don't they realize it is not just the way the show is set up but the combination of everything together. The co-host and how the interact. Clarkson is hilarious and the whole show just works. The Botswana episode is my favorite so far. I laughed though the entire show. Producer:rolleyes: |
Why would anybody watch that moron doing a "car program"? I saw him on windtunnel once, that was enough.

Pilot of show is done; waiting to be picked up
On his show in early August, Carolla said the pilot is done
and they are waiting to see if it is picked up. Don't know who the co-hosts are either in the pilot or if they do more shows. Ironically Jay Leno is retiring soon from the Tonight Show and this would be a good show for him--he would have the right dash of humor--but obviously he wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Carolla, and it would be a precipitious drop in pay (considering he makes at least $15 million as host of the Tonight show) |
As an ex-pat Brit, I have to say that I find the English 'Top Gear' to be remarkable TV (i.e. brilliant!!!), and the complete political incorrectness of Clarkson and his cronies is what makes it so appealing. It will NOT do well over here, just like none of the other transplant shows have because of the English penchant for sarcasm which does NOT translate well for most Americans.
Jeez, I remember the thread I started a few months ago about how we ought to at least be able to 'clip' cyclists on the road as we drive past them as they are nothing but a frigging annoyance on the road. A DIRECT quote from Clarkson, but with a HUGE dose of sarcasm, and I was almost lynched by folks on here who just didn't "get it". Would be immense fun though if they ever found the right hosts who can mix sarcasm, incredibly quick wits and relatively unbiased detailed car knowledge (although don't get Clarkson started on American cars!!!!!!), but I don't think Adam Carolla is the right one, nor Seinfeld...Leno WOULD be good!!! The show cannot be improved upon! Clarkson and Co. are the only ones to pull it off. So...........6 months in the UK and 6 months in the U.S. Problem solved :D
|
Maybe Tim Allen could pull it off. At least he's funny. Adam Corolla is a waste of oxygen.
|
Peter Egan, David Hobbs, and Denise McCluggage, Ron Fellows as the Stig
|
I can't see the Network Brass letting the hosts rag on any of the the cars. I can hear the producers "Let's not alienate potential advertisers" speech at the writers meetings.
