Please help me ID a 5 spd trans...

I have a couple of options but any choice must fit a 351W block that will be strocked to 392.

Can anyone tell me if a 5 spd trans from a '96 Mustang, part number F6ZR-7003-CC (there are more ##s on the tag if it helps) is any better/stronger than a typical late '80s T5? Better ratios?

I realize a different bell housing will be needed (mod motor vrs pushrod) but don't want to creat a bellhousing that has less options (Tremec, etc) in the future.

This will be primarily driven on the street with track time being mostly twisty-swervy rather than the straight-line slinghot stuff.

Many thanks for any insight!!!!

How I answered this question.

Forget T-5's out of any production cars. Particularly mid '80's cars. They have the wide ratio (3.31) gearset, and less torque capacity.

Get the SVO "Z" T-5 with the close ratio (2.95) gearset. I went one step further, bought the T-5 from Liberty Racing Transmissions (313) 278-4040, had it blueprinted and swapped the .68 OD gear for a .80.

Keep in mind that the weak link in your drivetrain is the trans, The only thing protecting it is a light car and street tires that will spin before damaging the trans. As a primarily street use car, the T-5 should be fine. For drag racing, I'd use a C4. For autocrossing, a toploader.

The bellhousing is specific for the T-5. Tremec uses a different one.

Thanks Jack. I realize that eventually I'll need to upgrade. I have a T5 and bellhousing. I have the trans listed above but would need a different bell housing and that would be a good time to upgrade to a blowproof one but I don't want to create a trans specific bellhousing that has to be scrapped when I do upgrade.
