Lexan windshield care
I recently installed a Lexan windshield on my car.
I know others have done this and have been wondering what special care you might recommend to avoid scratching the surface. Also, has anyone tried tear-offs? Do they work on street cars and are they worth using? The source for any products you are using would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Jody |
polycarbonate
I don't know of any 'tear offs' that are optical quality, although there probably are some clear tint style films. But polycarbonate is as soft as mud in the plastic world and scratches are the price for shatter resistance. Of course you could buff them out with anything from (some) toothpaste, to 'PolyWatch' and the myraid of mild cutters and polishers from auto stores.
I believe race cars use polycarbonate with a silica 'marr-guard', so you have the protection of polycarbonate with the scratch resistance of glass. It's not cheap and can't be bent much (if you're working from flat sheet) and will run at least $500. A formed and marr-guarded windshield will be big bucks. I'm sure a speed shop could help you. Use a wet towel to soften and loosen bugs and other road grime. Just wet it and lay it on the windshield.
And needless to say, use microfiber rags. |
aircraft supply houses will have stuff specifically for plexiglas. don't use any type of paper to clean, you'll scratch it.

The Lexan IS going to get scratched and you cannot do anything about it. Your best bet is to look at Irvan-Smith for their two-stage Lexan polishing compounds and at polish it suitable intervals. The military spends a lot of time keeping fighter canopies clear enough to see through. No different here.

Whatever you do, don't use Windex or any alcohol based product. It will dull and yellow it.

I have had a Marguard which lasted years. It did cost a bunch.,and after a prang where a tree scratche dthe windshield right in front of me....saving my life for sure.. I replaced it with a new non marguard....because I cheaped out!!! Idiot....it has scratched .... and I have used a high speed polisher on it for somewhat decent results ..........but it is not as good as the Marguard which I regularly used the wipers in the rain even.... without scratching..

Lexan MR10 is your best bet, already very scratch resistant.
