Well bear in mind the particular engine I'm talking about would make peek horse power around 7,000 rpm and was flowing some serious air. The more air you flow the larger the impact from the exhaust system.
Jetting is critical when switching from closed to open headers. I was running VERY rich with the air cleaners and the sidepipes on (6 mpg). Removing the air cleaners and the sidepipes my air/fuel was just about perfect. Ideally you would switch jets at the track and then back for the street. Not to mention advance the timing well beyond what you run on the street and run high octane race gas ($6 or $7 a gallon). In other words, a pain the butt for an occasional 1/4 mile pass when 95% of the rest of your driving is on the street!

true that. it's too easy to just think jetting will cut it when pump squirters power valves, accellerator pump cams and boosters all play in to it hell it would be easier to just have a spare carb for open headers that was set up right. mpg or smiles to the mile?!!! :)
