Contemporary Clutch Master Cylinder
:(I need help. My 1991 Contemporary Cobra Master clutch cylinder is leaking, time to fix or replace.
If anyone can identify the attached photo, please let me know. I think they are Girling or Tilton or....???? Also if anyone has a source for these, please let me know. I am open to suggestions. My cobra has bottom swung pedals and my builders/owners manual only has instructions for top swung pedals.:CRY: |

Hmmmm - interesting masters that I don't recognize. If the mounting bolts are 2.25" on center, you can use Girling, Tilton, or almost any of the other aftermarket cylinders. Generally, Girling are the most compact, so if you must restrict your length, they're the best. If you can measure the length from mounting flange to the end, that would help too.

I would be very interested to know what you find out also. I too have a '91 Contemporary with under floor mounted pedals. I have never been really pleased with the set-up but it isn't too bad. My clutch slave cylinder is a Girling for sure. I have rebuilt it at one point. Tell me more about your car when you get a chance. I am finishing the conversion to Weber carbs this week. Should be back on the road this weekend. |

Thanks for the reply, I knew there was a master mind out there somewhere that would take up the challenge. Also, I knew there would be out there like Zimmy who need to know. My drawing skills have gone downhill since my drafting days but this quick & dirty. 7/8" outside Diameter should give it a bore of 5/8" a longer cylinder Longer will fit, and larger diameter bore would probably lessen the pedal travel I have with the Girling slave cylinder. sorry I didn't include this before, the photo's are 10 years old. Because it uses a standard spread, you can use most aftermarket cylinders. The Tilton (which I would prefer over Girling) is the biggest though, so it might not fit. The Tilton is 5.4" long and has extra transverse bosses that are 1.7" wide. They are available in 5/8", 11/16", 3/4" and 7/8" ID.
If those are too big to fit, smaller Girlings are available from a bunch of places like Neal Products. |
Bill, I replaced my Contemporary floor mounted master cylinders with CNC units with s/s bores. The clutch is a 7/8ths bore and both brake cylinders are 3/4 in. bores. These were a direct bolt in replacement for those no name units that came with the car when new in '93. I remember that I had to use the push rods from the original units as two of the three supplied with the CNC units were the wrong length (no sweat).Call the Chassis Shop @ 1-800-530-9494 Order CNC part # 712-7-8 for the clutch and 712-3-4 for each of the brakes. In July of "00 they were 54.60 each. Hope this helps

Bill- those are CNC 3/4 master cylinders that Contemporary sourced from CNC. A photo of them are in the CNC catalogue on page 23 listed as part # 711-3/4, and they are rebuildable with Rebuild Kit 907 NR. CNC 's phone # is 619 275-1663 or orders only 800 237-3111. I have used them hard for 10 years with one rebuild. Any other questions give me a call. Are you still coming to R & G.

:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: Thanks one and all for the help. CNC is the correct answer. all 3 of my cylinders were 3/4" ID. I am replacing the clutch with one 7/8" ID (This should allow less clutch pedal travel) Lets consider the issue closed.
