Type of fuel sending unit ?
I have a fuel gauge sending unit question-
I have 1999/2000 year...VDO electric gauges now. I just bought the electric Nisonger Instruments/Smith Cobra gauges. Yeah ! :D Peter Bayer is one heck of a guy. ;) I need to find out which type of sending unit I have for the new gauge. What do I need to do ? Below is part of a post I found on the net. I have no frickin idea what the #ell it means, as I'm clueless to electronics ! :o Different sending units for electronic speedometers. They listed the following - Signal generators or Hall Effect Generators/Switches, Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS, Magnetic Proximity Sensor, Signal Converters |
The fuel gauge will be a resistance range, you may need to email the mfg. to find out which type they use. (or if the sender is still out you can ohm it) Search "fuel sender" here and you'll see the types listed. Typically, there are different versions of the same fuel guage to match the sender.
As far as the pulse sender stuff you have listed, this is referring to the speed sending unit, there are different methods of producing the pulse (ie: magnetic, optical) but the output of the sender is the same regardless of the method used. Same holds true for distributor pickups, they all have to do the same thing, fire the coil. |

VDO 1-10-180 ohm 2-0-90 ohm 3-V.W.-sender found those on the VDO web site Auto-Meter 1-0 empty-30 full 2-0 empty-90 full 3-16 empty-158 full 4-240 empty-33 full 5-73 empty-10 full 6-programable found those in Summit catalog see if you can find the original part # for your sending unit in your paper work it shold have the ohm rateing if it dosent the you may find it oh the VDO web site........ whats the ohm readings on your new guage???? you can check the ohm readings on your old sender its not that hard to do....... |
The owner of lone Star does not know what I have. He did give me the ph. number of the company that makes his fuel tank. "vehicle controls". I left a message. I may also call VDO.
I really don't want to take out the sender, as it's a real pain. I would have to remove the tank because the sender is on top and can not be reached. He said I could also remove the carpet and cut a hole in the truck floor. Hate to do that also. Is there a pig tail connection somewhere the wire harness that I could check the ohms, or at the gauge ? If all else fails without removing the tank, I'll just use the VDO I have. It looks similar,... to the Smith's. Thanks for posing the information bud ! |
You shoud be able to read the ohms at the back of the guage...
drain it and take an ohm reading then fill it and take an ohm reading.. |

I just talked with "vehicle Controls" that supply the VDO gauge's to Lone Star. She said this part # is most common and that their sure they haven't changed sine my build in 2000. 10-180 ohms. VDO Sender, for Fuel Gauge, 6-23" Adj VDO :cool:**)**)**)**)**)**)**)**)**) WHEW, I did NOT,...want to take the tank down ! lol |
Some Nisonger fuel gauges use the 240/33 ohm range. Call them about what they sent you.
