taillamps

Does anybody know if there is someone in aftermarket that offers the rectangular rear lamp in a two bulb set-up(per lamp)? one bulb for a turn and another for run/stop. I have single bulb set-up and light is weak. I've tried halogen bulb but turn-signals now won't function. I'd also prefer dual bulb for safety reasons, ie divorced functions.

Be careful of halogen bulbs, they can get too hot and burn/melt your lenses as well as draw more electicity/ amperage. Recommend instead LED light bulbs which give more intense light/ brightness and draw less amps than normal bulbs. I have not seen the two bulb system you describe but the LED bulbs can be purchased from Randall Thomas who is an offroad builder but also a SPF owner and seller of Cobra related parts ...try his website at ( hope this is right): www.performanceunlimited.com and search for the Cobra items. I added the LED bulbs to my SPF which were also dimmer than desired when stock bulbs were used and now have brilliant lighting. Bill Wells

Bill: thanks for advice, I will contact him. Does your SPF have single taillamp bulb(1157)? I see you are Bloomfield, I am in Ann Arbor!

I have both the 1157 and the 1156 in my rectangular rear lamp assembly. Performance Unlimited carries both bulbs in the high intensity LED...worth the price ! Look at their site listed above under "427 accessories" and there is a separate section on the bulbs ! Go Blue !! Bill

Bill: sounds like your rear lamp ass'y is what I need. My "Lucas" ass'y has single 1157 bulb performing all three functions. Yours sounds like 1156 bulb does turn and 1157 bulb does stop/run(per FMVSS stds).

Bill Wells 09-23-2001 05:58 AM

yes sir, turn signal is its own bulb...run and brake lights are also a separate bulb. each bulb has its own socket obviously and housing . half of the vertical rectangle lens area is illuminated by each...so on run/brake only 1/2 of the entire lens is backlit/illuminated, same with turn only (the other half) and if braking at same time as turn sig is on , then the entire lens is illuminated. B (I can see clearly now, er, be seen clearly now)

Bill: called Superformance today and parts on order to convert single bulb set-up to dual bulb(they make new backplate that fits on rectangular lamp and s/s box; also carry sockets). Will also use LEDs as you have done. Practical solution to single bulb/low output rear lamp. Good tip for others. thx

Charles, how do I get a hold of Superformance?

Bill Wells 09-25-2001 05:26 AM

Call 1-800-29SNAKE , ie, (1-800-297-6253). Bill.

Frank Coppola 09-25-2001 06:14 AM

Bill, no dice with that distibutor. The lights look fine on the link you listed, I was interested in the whole assembly that Charles mentioned. I'm a bit confused, Superformance is a manufacter or a retailer? Thanks,

charles repp 09-25-2001 07:22 AM

Frank: call 513-738-4000 and ask for Mark in parts. They will sell whole lamp ass'y or pieces to convert yours (assuming you have small rectangular). Bill was right it is Superformance, just happens to be their parts area you need to talk to...
