Bad Voltage Regulator?

Hey all, I have just got my Cobra on the road and notice the volt meter reads about 14.5 volts while the car is running but about 12 volts when off. Is this a normal condition or perhaps I need to check the wiring of my duraspark ignition or the voltage regulator.
As always thanks for your help........Jim:JEKYLHYDE

Normal voltage while the car is running should be between 13.5 to 15.5 volts. 12 volts when the car is not running is also normal. I noticed you are using a duraspark ignition. What are you using for the controll module? The reason I ask is I am having a little problems with getting my ignition wired up. I am using a MSD 6AL and wired it up per instructions and have no power at the coil with the key on. I am also using the painless wiring harness. If you can help out that would be great.

Thanks, Ray:cool:

Mine is running at 14.3 volts. Voltage out of regulator must be higher than battery voltage to charge the battery. Hows the B+B? Jim

Jim - your voltmeter readings do not look too far out. if you have a good meter, check the voltage across the battery with about 2000 rpm on, i.e. full charge - should be 14.3 volts. This will drop back a couple of volts when you turn the engine off.

Car instruments not exactly accurate anyway.
