'quieter' sidepipes?
This is blaspheme I know... I want to take the wife on a long trip and if she realizes how loud this car really is, she will probably ride home with someone else. This could be a good or bad thing. Anyway, back to the subject.
Can you baffle the pipes at all? It also scares the hell out of little kids when i start it up. |
Only way my wife will ride in the car is if I use alot of 4th and 5th gears and lug it , no rapid acceleration when noise kicks in, same when revving it over 3,000 rpm as to loud then too, so keep it at lower rpm's ....when I do all the above it is quiet enough and she will ride in it ! she objects to ear plugs which is another alternative. So, when I do all of the above it is like cruising in a YUGO ... a quiet Yugo ! Good luck. Another alternative is to go to Midas Muffler and have some super quiet mufflers installed to replace the side pipes...NAH....B

Add some diamonds to those ear plugs and she won't be so negative about wearing them. Cost? Depends on how much you really want her to ride with you or with someone else:D

Go to your nearest muffler shop. Buy a set of their 4" case x 3" I.D. x 3 1/2" inlet/outlet x 24" long glasspak mufflers. Cut out your mufflers and TIG weld these in place. I just did it and the wife no longer jumps when I start up. Sound level now is reduced. When in 4th or 5th just cruisin' along it has a low, soft tone. When I get on it, the exhaust sounds like a Cobra should.
I like the new mufflers, I can sneak around town without breaking any glass on the car next to me at the light. For a GOOD looking job, TIG weld, not MIG weld. I used header flanges on the entrance to the new mufflers so that I can change at will. Jim, Shell Valley, 351W poked out & warmed up |

As anyone in the 'bay area" can attest to, I am very loud. After driving 650 miles last weekend I agree that quality earplugs are a must. I would not attempt any trip of any distance without them.
I also added car chemistry inserts into the end of the tail pipes. It made a world of difference for me, although others tell me I am still extremely loud. I put the inserts in without any cutting of the pipes. Trimmed the inserts and hammered them in. I riveted them in place, to make sure I liked them, and will tack weld them in place now that I am sure that they work. |
I must admit that there are advantages to having a wife who's deaf in one ear (thanks to something called an acoustic neuroma years ago). And luckily it's her right ear, so the sidepipes won't be such a problem.
The biggest disadvantage is that she can't tell where sound is coming from (non-stereo). Keith |
Just to make you guys jealous, my wife loves driving the Cobra on the street and on the track. She gets a particular kick when we set off the car alarmsin parked cars just rumbling down the street. At open track events, I have to register both of us in seperate run groups so that we each get enough seat time.:):)

Excelguru, funny you should mention the acoustic neuroma-had mine 12yrs ago but on the left so no problem if I'm the driver:D . Seriously with only one ear {and it ain't good} plugs are real important. My buds have too much fun with my lack of sonar.

Earplugs get the nod, but something else to consider is having the tips of the pipes angled down 45 degrees. A friend here in Dallas has his that way, and his car is seemingly much quieter than mine. Dont really notice the change unless you check the car out well, in which case (to me) it looks rather odd. Another possible source of the quiet is the fact that my friend is a girly-man who installed a 351C in his rather than a man's motor.:LOL:

I turned down the tips of my pipes 45 degrees on another car and the sound got LOUDER from reverberation and sound bounce back from the pavement , curbs etc.... guess after reading all of the above, EAR PLUGS are the way WITHOUT the diamonds and stones attached. DV gave me the lead and I had a custom set of mufflers made: Lucien Donofrio Arizona Exhaust 4009 North 39th Ave Phoenix AZ 85019 602.415.9737 ( no web site or e-mail ) While my set were open chamber, as in deep and loud, Lucien I think will make whatever you ask for. The cost was $25/ea and $25 for S & H to CT. Quality was excellent. Since then, a427SC, informed me of a quick release clamp for the muffler which will allow for a set of quiet and loud mufflers.
