The wiring in my cobra is a birds nest!
Can somebody help me? Where can i find a wiring diagram for my newest toy... A cmc cobra kit built in 1993... Or anything else that might be helpful in getting everything working again and looking good on the car...

I can't help you with a wiring diagram but you should have seen the mess in my Coupe. I had it all taken out and a brand new wiring harness put in. It not only looks a lot better but I am sure that once everything is all finished with the rest of it I won't have any problems with loose connectors and such.

If you decide to re-wire it talk to Ken at Haywire. They make wiring harneses for Cobras. Every wire is maked where it goes and the cost is very reasonable.

93cmc,
How much do you understand about wiring and electricity? If the old wiring looks bad, doesn't work and is 20 years old, why not replace it all? Unless you've got a computer controlled, fuel injection wiring harness, there aren't many car wiring challenges simpler than a Cobra replica. I replaced all the wiring in my car with a home built harness a few years ago. I started by listing all the electrical components and sketched out a wiring diagram. I then decided on wire colors and gauges, and routing for each wire bundle. I bought a bunch of wire and started cutting it to rough length and bundled it as required. In those cases where there were more than two wires of the same color, I attached labels to each end. I installed the bundles, trimmed each wire to the correct length, installed wire ends and connected each to its component. Along the way, I saw things I didn't like about the way the car had been wired, and I changed things that needed it. |
a lot of the old Cobras were wired by people who knew a "little bit" about wiring a car.
Most of the older Cobras I have worked on have a lot of wiring issue. What type of fuel panel does you have? Fans, electric fuel pump, heater, wiper, push button start, etc. Do you want to use what you have or can you afford to buy a new harness and start over? Harness should cost $300 to $500. I draw my own diagrams for the components that I want to install. If you tell me what you have or want I could draw one for you. Something I like doing. It's more fun than watching TV. I do have a lot of diagrams saved into a computer folder but not a full dawning for a Cobra. Please feel free to email me if I can help. Dwight algunruner@aol.com |
I bought a complete doner car. Would it be easier to use the complete wiring loom from that car, and just cut out the stuff I don't need? Shorten or lenghten the wires to tidy it up. I got a new wiring loom with the cobra, but I would still have to use all the engine loom.
JD P.S. Does anybody have a wiring diagram for a 92 Ford Fairlane? |
I just finished wiring my car, and it was pretty easy really. My suggestion would be to steer clear of using chassis wiring off old cars.
Buy a whole roll of 7 core 10amp cable, 2-3 fuse small fuseboxes (about 15 total fuses) and depending on where you have your battery about 5m of battery cable (255amp heavy gauge stuff). 2 2pin flasher cans Relays for headlights, hibeams, horn, thermo fans and fuel pump. Mount the battery in your boot and mount the fuseboxes somewhere accessable and out of harms way. Run 7 core cable to the rear of the car from your column (just loose), to the farthest point it will be used, and run a 7 core cable to the front to the furthest point. Wire the rear of the car and make your own wire, colour list eg (this was my coding) Rear Colour Does From which fusebox red brake solid + white taillights acc yellow left indicator green right indicator brown reverse light acc black fuel pump relay acc blue fuel gauge sender acc Front red hi beam relay solid + white headlight relay acc yellow left indicator green right indicator brown parker lights acc black horn relay solid + blue thermo relay acc tap into the loom only where you need to,and you can also use the unused wires at the end of the loom as earths. Do the same at the front, but the loom should finish in a relay box. From the relay box, run heavier gauge wire to headlights, horn and thermo's. Wire earths as you go, So you can check your wiring if you need to. Wire a solid positive over to your ignition switch. Wire seven core wire all joined together at ign switch end to acc position on switch and run it back into one of the fuse boxes. Run a 7 core cable to the other fusebox from battery+ place flasher cans and wire one (for hazards) from solid + fusebox and the other from acc Run seperate looms from column for gauge signal wires and wiper/washers If you put a short length of wire between a fuse and your loose looms and you should be able to use your chassis electrics Then you figure out what does what with your column switching. When connecting the final column to front and rear looms don't forget to tap into wire for dash lights for things you want to know are on. Hibeams, left and right indicators, thermos, fuel pump. Leave them long and loose for connecting into your dash. You should then get the family in the shed and give them a light show |
The best thing to do is just remove all the old wiring and buy a new Painless Wiring kit. They are top quality and are very straight forward to put in.

Agreed. Get a Painless wiring kit.

Kwikwire has a street car harness that is flexible and works well. ST. WIRE & CABLE INC. // KWIK WIRE // Wire harnesses and electronics for street rods and industrial fleets. - they are used in kirkhams!

Here is another vote for replacing the birds nest with a new harness. A 10 circuit harness works on a basic plain old cobra but the 15 or even 20 circuit kits are so close in price, well bigger is always better. another big bonus is having a diagram and place to jot down your install notes or whatever.
