Jag IRS Squeal when turning
At slow speeds, I am hearing a slight squealing noise when I make a sharp left hand turn. The squeal maybe happening at higher speeds but I just can’t hear it. Sometimes at higher speeds I feel a slight vibration from the rear when turning. I have a Jag IRS with a power lock. What gear oil weight do you recommend? I noticed that Bob P. had suggested to someone with similar symptoms to “replace the dif fluid with two tubes of GM additive 1052358 and GL80-90.”
I am not sure what this means. Does it mean to add one tube of GM additive 1052358 and one tube of GM additive GL80-90 to new Gear Oil? What weight of Geal Oil do you recommend? Also, With the car up on jack stands, when rotating one rear wheel by hand, should the other rear wheel turn in the same or opposite direction? I assumed it should rotate the opposite direction providing a “slip” differential and at Full Power the Power lock would kick in and lock in power to both wheels. When I turn one of my rear wheels by hand, the opposite wheel turns in the same direction. |
IF you are hearing a squeal in the rear,,,,check it before yoy drive it again! It amy be something as simple a a loose nut to something more serious,,,if it fails at speed or on the road you could end up in serious trouble....I would check all U-Joints, Bearings, fluid level in housing, every nut&bolt that holds the Jag rear-end in place...
On the oil, I have gone with Royal Purple ( synthetic) If I recall, it is 70w. You could always call Unique and talk with Maurice or AL ,,,,they will definetly help you out |
Some limited slips "stick" and create a judder or tire squeal when turning. If that's the case with yours:
After draining the old oil, fill with two tubes of GM additive 1052358 and then top off with GL80-90 gear oil. |

Limited Slip, Posi-trac, Power Lock, or what have you, all act alike when both wheels are off the ground like you mentioned. Both wheels will turn the in the same direction..... providing the tranny is in neutral. An "open" rear will turn in opposite directions. I have the jag rear in my car too and notice a very high pitched squeel at low speeds. Mine doesn't care if I'm going straight or turning. Can't seem to duplicate the problem with the car jacked up (on stands) with the engine turning the wheels. And it might go hours without a peep...... Everything looks good and tight too. Good luck with yours. - Jim - PS I put in the stuff Bob Putnam mentioned too. Don't think my noise is from that area of the rear though. Seems to be more outwards from center. |

Thanks everyone! Sometimes my ignorance embarrasses me. I greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and helpfulness.
I’ll get with Unique for their input. I am going to I change out the rear differential fluid per Bob’s recommendations. Jim, thank you for the education. Bob, I would like to thank you for your many posts on Club Cobra. I always find your diagrams helpful including the one for the proper placement of emblems/badges. I’ll post how everything works out. I also hear a loud squeal from the rear when turning.
Not sure what to do to stop it, but when I DON'T hear it, I can usually rememdy the problem by applying more pressure to the right most pedal. Hee hee. Sorry, couldn't resist. :LOL: |
HI RICK LAKE HERE. I HAVE A LOCKER IN MY JAG REAR AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAVE. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE POSI LOCKING WHEN TURNING. YOU SHOULD GET THIS NOISE IN BOTH TURNING DIRECTIONS. IF YOU DO NOT, START CHECKING BEARING, THE NOISE YOU TALK ABOUT SOUNDS LIKE MINE. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A BURNT UP STUB SHAFT BEARING IN MY REAR AND I HAD TO REPLACE THE CARRIER, GEARS, ALL BEARINGS AND SEALS. IF YOU TAPE A PIECE OF RUBBER HOSE 3/32 OR 5/32 AND ROAD TEST THE CAR AND TRY TO FINE OUT WHERE THE NOISE IS COMING FROM, IT COULD BE A SPINDLE SHAFT BEARING IN THE OUTTER HOUSING. GO AND BUY A SET OF CHASSIC EARS AND YOU WILL FIND THE NOISE EASY. A GOOD AUTOPARTS STORE CAN GET ONE ORDERED FOR YOU. TRY TO FIND THE NOISE BEFOR IT DOES DAMAGE TO YOUR CAR OR REAR. MY REPAIR OF MY CAR WAS $552.00 AND A REDID THE REAR MY SELF. CHECK THE FLUID COLOR AND CHECK FOR SILVER, OR METAL FILES IN IT IF NONE ARE FOUND YOUR NOISE MAY BE NORMAL. I carefully inspected the rear. Everything looks proper. Nothing loose. I replaced the fluid today and added the additive per Bob Putnam’s advice. I did take it out for about a 20-minute drive and did not notice any vibration or the noise I was hearing. So hopefully everything is OK. I’ll keep an eye (ear) out to see if it comes back. Allen Weaver said that the locker rear-ends a characteristically noisy. Thanks everyone.
