Anyone running IDFs? Cal Metal? Anyone?
I'm hoping that someone can give me the lowdown on IDFs vs IDA Webers. I need to make a decision with respect to running carbs at all, and, if so which set.
I've actually got a set of IDFs that are mounted on a Forb SB manifold that I've had for quite sometime. But, lots of folks have indicated that I may not want to use these for drivability reasons etc. Now I'm confused as I've heard that IDFs are tunable and offer some drivability advantages over IDAs. Motor is a 342 stroker, 10.5-11:1, AFR heads, X cam. Car weight will be around 2200-2300lbs, motor probably will not see more than 6500 RPM. 90% Street, 10% light track duty for fun. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ron |
Ron:
Differences are minimal. Pretty quickly they boil down to this: The IDF utilizes an air control screw so EACH carb can be 'synched' as a unit. The IDA does not have this provision. It supposedly provides allows for a smoother idle. The IDF uses a diaphram accelerator pump whereas the IDA uses a piston design . The theory is that the piston is not as efficient as the diaphram. I have never talked with anyone who found this to be true, however. The IDF is about 1 inch shorter which is good if hood clearance is a problem. Many of the guys on the forum have used IDFs. I personally like the IDAs because they are what came with the original car. They are larger and have a more rugged look. The info on them, and the people like Enzo who know them well, gives you a great source in the 'how to' area in learning a about them. Hey.. I even have the original Weber manual from Bologna. Send me your address and I will make a copy. |
