Superformance made me walk home !
Went out for a ride last night and heard a "POP' from the rear of the car. Then quickly noticed the engine increased RPM and speed was dropping off. -Busted Axel, CV Joint-Differential are OK. Happened in traffic at 40mph.
I had heard SF was having axel issues in the older cars but mine is an '06 build. Boo Ho.:( So, any one with any repair suggestions or valauable information ? |

Where exactly did it break? The Thunderbird IRS is very reliable in these cars unless you are dropping the clutch with more than 550 ft/lb and sticky tires. There are stronger aftermarket axels available if needed. Www.driveshaftshop.com

I wonder what the failure mechanism was. It is hard to imagine an axle snapping when you are just driving along, but I'm clueless about how this might happen. You mention the RPM increased, but wouldn't the limited slip keep the good axle pushing the Cobra? I lost a wheel bearing last summer and wondering if I should have inspected the axle a little closer. Do you have any pictures? Good luck pulling everything and getting it back together! It was a bit of a challenge for me, but with the help of Randy Thomas and my installer I was able to replace both wheel bearings.

Call the Driveshaftshop and talk to them about some new axles. Best to send them your old ones and have them rebuild both with 300M center shafts.

I have replacement axles from DSS on #408. Happy with them....quality item. They have the measurements on-file so it's a quick order.
I had to get different nuts for the outer axle as the ones that DSS ships have a shoulder that is too wide for the spinner adapter on the SPF...so be aware. I got mine from SPF, but I think they are just standard Ford t-bird part. I think they were like $10 each. |

I have #2379 with the Dana rear. I don't know how to post pictures but the axel failure looks to be a poor "Heat Treat" after splineing . There is no evidence of twisting. In response to dropping the hammer. At 5K RPM, with sticky tires -no - at least not this time. Thanks to the application of a Demon 750 carb -good tune , I am getting 522Hp / 505FP Tqe at the rear wheels on the Dyno Jet. (Roush 427R circa 2006). Thanks Mr.Mustang , haven't seen you since last fall at Beans Ford. Yes JB we must be close ---I am near the Seven Stars Rest. I am in contact with DSS in N.C. Seems they are over a month out just to assemble. Geeeeeze ! |

If you're getting 522 hp at the rear wheels, something back there is bound to eventually twist in half.
