help on parts cross referencing
All,
Trying to find a current "cross reference" for a older radiator hose. This is a non stock application that fits better IMHO but lost my manual and my personal build notes/equivalent parts numbers. Out in the trash no doubt. ID # stamped/molded in the hose seems to be different from the typical tag/number the retailers seem to use. Stamped: U262 49602 So is one prefix, like U262, a manufacturer code? Like "DAYCO", "Gates", "GoodYear" ? Second number 49602 size/application ? Think this is a manufacturer in-house number...guessing they then marketed the piece to different auto-parts chains...the chain assigns their OWN retail number. O'Reilly's computer shows nothing...hose was purchased there 10 years ago...at that time the chain was "KRAGEN". Counter guy has been there forever and said he thought they were selling "Goodyear" stuff back when they were a KRAGEN franchise. My internet searches have not worked for me. Originally found the hose just going through all the hoses hanging in the store...went through all their hoses yesterday but can't find that one. Car is about ready to go after a engine rebuild but wanted to replace the all the hoses/belts after 10+ years, thanks, Pete |
you don't have good numbers there, either reading wrong or something missing.
a goodyear 49602 is a belt tensioner for a cummings diesel in an orion bus. no one's hoses start with a "4" |

Thanks for checking... actually found that same Goodyear belt tensioner yesterday also...when I saw that was thinking this was not going to be easy...if possible. Just went over the hose again and it is definitely: U262 49602 The number sequence repeats three times over the length of the hose...wiped it down and with a bright light and magnifier...that's it...no other marking or logo on the hose. This section is about 14" long roughly. Any idea's out there I'm open to trying them. Pete |
Call Bob at ERA Pete. They made up sections of several #'s to fit FIA's and 427's.
Maybe post a photo here or to him of your location. |

Actually sent photos to Bob several years back when I did the hose switch. If he archives e-mail from customers I'd be home free...rather doubt emails that far back still exist except with the NSA... At the time Bob was concerned the hose would abrade on the ant-roll bar, but the hose looks perfect, no abrasion on anything, about 12,000 miles in service. The only reason I am replacing hoses is due to age...probably would have reused this one except I cut it to get it off when I pulled the radiator for the engine rebuild. Try to post photos here, but they usually end up too small...we shall see. Isn't there must a Rosetta Stone for car parts numbers....? Pete |

Failing all that-how about bending a hard pipe section (like a header shop) and just use short hose connectors-sorta like your upper hose?? :confused: |

i would look at some early ford with a 289. mustang falcon comet.....it sure is close to a early mustang with a small block

Thanks for looking at this. On the shields, they can't hurt. As it turned out it was never an issue in my application... Meantime I am pretty sure the car isn't going to be on the road this weekend...close...so I will be looking into suggestions. Seems like someone out there in the parts business would recognize the designator on the hose. Just to repeat in case you just started reading the thread the number on the hose is U262 49602...molded into the hose... Pete |
Suggest you take the hose you want to match to a NAPA store. Numbers have changed in some instances. To get multple coverage out of a single hose number many have longer lengths that would require cutting.

On my way to a NAPA store tomorrow after talking to a counter guy this afternoon...he has several hoses that the local chain store thought were obsolete numbers...only in their in house computer system. They aren't set up to be too versatile.
The hose I am trying to find, "U262 49602" is a hose that I trimmed quite a bit at both ends from the original...huge element of luck to have seen it hanging on a wall and realizing that the center half may work...and it is about perfect like it was designed for the app. Did find a hose that is pretty close to being OK, not as good a fit but will probably fit and do the job...before I chop it up, will keep looking maybe the original will turn up. In the meantime will see if the NAPA store will let me rummage through the hoses in stock and maybe find the same piece or closer than what I have now. At about $15/20 a hose will think twice before chopping up something that may not work... Tomorrow I will report on any luck with some new hoses...man, I wish I had the RETAIL PART NUMBER...what a pain this has turned out to be. thanks for the help, Pete |

Pete: NAPA has saved my skin numerous times for hoses and electrical sending units. Their illustrated electronic and paper catalogs were second to none. Pictures help a lot. Consider making the curved part as a hard line from pieces of aluminum Mandrel bends(burns Stainless) which are cut and welded, ultimately using two short lengths of straight hose about 4" long on each end. |
