Original Hood Rivet Pattern
If anyone is interested in the rivet pattern,
I took a photo of the pattern I have and put it up on my server at http://www.priveye.com/images/RIVET1.JPG I used 6x32 S/S button heads. The heads are the same diameter as those of the 1/8th in. rivets. Allen key size is 5/64ths, available in lengths 1/4in., 3/8ths, 1/2, 5/8ths, 3/4, and 1 inch. Has EVAN confirmed that the drawing is REAL therefor that the rivet positioning is REAL ? or, that it does or does not conform to his REAL Cobra despite the fact that it is painted an UNREAL black ? hehehee..Bill. (real fakey dooh rivets in my car, affixed with real glue)

Evan has taken quite a bit of ribbing on this subject, and deservedly so. But I can't help but wonder if this is like so many other things with Shelby American. Some mechanic probably hurriedly pop-riveted a bunch of rivets in place during some race somewhere. No Pete Brock sketch was prepared ahead of time. No careful measurement. Merely a response to fix a problem the best way they knew how. The rivets were an afterthought to prevent the hood skin from ripping off on the comp cars.
Now fast forward to 2001. Some original car somewhere gets measured by someone, and all of a sudden there's a "correct" way to put the rivets in. I'll bet that if you could even find two original comp cars that had somehow escaped the restoration shop all these years, the rivets would not be placed in exactly the same location or even be of the same material. When cars are hand built, and constantly being modified during the racing season, the idea that any two being alike or "correct" becomes pretty remote. So the issue then becomes whether you are replicating all Cobras, or just one. My opinion. Feel free to disagree. |

Next time you are in the states, you are more than welcome to take as many measurements as you want from it |

The number of rivets used and spacing were left up to the SAI mechanic that installed them. |
Is there an accepted standard?
When I got a glass hoodscoop from McCluskey during my paintjob, I was asked if I wanted "the correct rivet pattern", both on the scoop and hood. %/ |

I have spoken to one of the original SAI race team crew members (I am now the care taker of his SAI team clothing) and Richard Messersmith (original owner of CSX3018) when he was still with us (miss you RM!) about this very issue, the crew member said it was up to the crew that were assigned to that particular race car when it was being built and Richard informed me that the riveting job done on his competition Cobra was done very crudely. Until someone comes up with an original SAI drawing mandating the riveting of the hood on Cobra competition cars I'm sticking with the knowledge learned from the people that were there when it was happening.
One story Richard passed on to me was how his mother would call up SAI to tell him to come home, he said he spent that much time there and at Hamburger Hamlet. Home for Richard at that time was in Chicago. |
