OT - oil pressure gage in newer cars

I'm on my second Mustang GT and curious about the oil pressure gage in newer cars. They never show any variation in pressure between cold and hot, low and high rpm. If I believed that they would have to be some sort of constant flow/pressure pump.

How do these things work? I'm suspicious they have a threshold down around 10 psi and anything above that they read at mid-scale without any variation. Basically no better than an old idiot light.

Am I right?

For at least 20 years Ford oil pressure gauges have been essentially idiot lights. They have a switch at the engine and when above about 5 psi the gauge reads mid scale. Below that they read 0.

This was Ford's solution in the mid 90s when everyone went to lower oil pressure for better mileage.

GM tweaked their sending units to read a bit higher than actual at that time.

This was all driven by customer complaints that the oil pressure was "low" on most cars.

I was a GMC Truck product engineer in the early 90s.

Maybe your engine has this technology:

Hmm - I suspect the truth is closer to John's post. My 03 Lightning is pretty much the same. Can't remember for sure about by 93 Explorer I had - it probably had the same idiot-gage.

Thanks

The oil pressure gauge on my STV Focus didn't even measure the oil pressure directly. It was computer driven based on a calculation of rpm, engine temp, and exhaust sensor. Geez. What bullshh*t.
