Rear spring geometry

I purchased a CMC frame and body and just started installing a 1990 8.8 rearend. The spring mount on the lower control arm is 1 5/8 inch behind the upper spring mount on the frame. So the spring sits on an angle and does not look correct. I will try to add a picture. Is this misalignment O.K. or do I need to cut the upper spring mount off and re weld it back further? The rear end did bolt right up and is centered in the frame. Thanks for the help!!!!!

What lower control arms did you use? They look wrong. They were supposed to be from a Mustang 2. Are yours from the 1990 Mustang?

Well, I read that the axle needed to be 59.5 inches wide and from a late model mustang 8.8. The manual was printed in the 90's so I used the entire rear suspension from a 1990 mustang. Is that wrong? Was I suppose to get the upper and lower control arms from a mustang II and will they bolt up to the rear end that I have? Thanks.

Check your wheelbase, it looks like the arms are too long as Joyridin points out.

I believe the length of the arms are the same, but they moved the spring perches rearward on the later Mustangs. Your best bet is to get a set of aftermarket upper and lower control arms and modify the spring perch on the lower arm. I grabbed a set of Factory 5 tubular arms, removed the perch, and welded it in the correct spot. It worked fine. Also, it looks as though you are using the spring from a later Mustang. You would have to shorten the spring or find a shorter one from a Mustang 2. I do not think you can remove the upper mount and move it back as it will hit the body. You would have to cut holes in the trunk.

The easiest fix if you can do it is find a set of QA1 coilovers from a Mustang and mount them on the rear. Then you can remove the upper spring perch altogether. They are relatively easy to find.

Wheelbase is 90 inches so the length looks correct. Instead of moving the lower control arm mounts forward, which would be easier, I think that I will cut out the upper mounts and re weld them back about 1 3/4 inch. That way the spring will be closer to the axle and I expect my ride to be a little smoother. This will be a street car. Thanks for the responses.
