Tight headers

Tight headers
The new silver ceramic coated headers are a real work of art and fit the chassis perfectly considering they were built in Gadsden with nothing but a set of measurements to work with. There is one problem though with the spark plug clearance. On the rear cylinders on both sides and the middle two on the left the pipes are almost right up against the tips of the plugs and I can barely squeeze the boots on, leaving them jammed tight against the headers. This, I assume is not a good thing. What are my alternatives other than a new set of headers? Can I have a spacer plate made up to give me a little more room? Are shorter or "compact" plugs available? Should I remove the headers and carefully put a kink or a dent in the affected pipes? Heeeelp!

Headers
Buzz what plugs are you using? Also, what type of plug wires ie: straight boots, 45 degree boots etc?
|
Clois, the plugs are AC R43TS and the boots are 90 degrees

Buzz, I believe Jegs or Summit offer a shorter plug for a Chevy, which may help your problem. I just trecently heard of these shorty plugs, will check my catalogues at home and get back to you if I get more details. Also, Speedway motors may have them. will let you know. Chris

I wrapped a shop rag around a pry bar and I was able to carefully lever it against the block and put just enough of a dent in a couple of the pipes for a bit more clearance. Now if only I can find some of those shorty plugs. Any spark plug experts out there?

tight headers
Buzz, check out the RC series champion spark plugs, they are .230"shorterthan a conventional plug and have a 5/8"hex for easier access in tight locations.

Thanks Bander, will do. I also found through the Summit site that Accel makes a shorty header plug for my application. I'll use which ever one gives me more clearance. Along with a set of reflective high temp wires and boots, I might be ok.
