Questions about steering
 

Hey guys, I just recently bought my first cobra and have just ordered some new wheels for it, Only problem is that the wheel hits the suspension only on the right side of the car, under closer observation this actually seems to be a problem with my steering and not the actual wheel.

If the wheels are straight and I turn the steering wheel almost 2 turns left than nothing hits my suspension at all, the steering box locks just as expected.
If the wheels are straigt and I turn the steering wheel about 1.8 turns right than my right wheel hits the suspension.

I did notice the other night that it seems my toe in/out look kind of off so after I get the car all back together than I'll take it to a suspension guy and that my fix my issue of the wheel hitting the suspension.

But my concern also is that I will be taking the car to track days and such and from what I can see, I think I have the Mustang 2 rack and pinion. do you think this setup should be fine for cornering? (Of course after I fix the interference problem) From what I remember on the track days that iv done in a miata I dont think I have had to ever get the wheel nowhere near to a locking point to take a corner, but I'm not sure how that would work on the cobra, being that I can only twist my arms about a half a turn anyways so I would get nowhere near locking point

The only time I came close to full steering lock during a track day event was after the back end stepped out and I was fighting a spin. Even then, I doubt I got to full lock. Note that my steering components are not the same as yours.

yeah I believe I have the mustang 2 20:1 ratio steering, since it takes me about 3.6 turns lock to lock (extreme left turn to extreme right turn) the quick steering boxes (15:1 steering ratio) lower this to 3.3 turns lock to lock, which I dont think would make a huge difference in steering performance.

Sometimes, when a builder is putting the car together, he doesn't get the rack centered when they do the alignment. Most alignment shops reference the steering wheel for center but in cars like ours, it may have been put on wrong from the beginning. You might want to let the alignment guy know he may want to center the rack first and not pay attention to the steering wheel. Then set the steering wheel afterwards.

The dead giveaway to a non centered rack is the length of the tie rods after the alignment is adjusted.

Different turning circles turning left or right are the result.

The tie rods should be within a thread of each other.
