Gettin too hot too fast...
I think I know the answer to this one but I just want someone elses opinion. My 428 CJ is a new build by a reputable machine shop but I think they missed something.
At start up my temp will peg to over 220 degrees in less than 3 minutes. I checked my thermostat and even removed it. Same result got hot in 3 mins. Full of oil and water and water is circulating. Timing is at 10 degrees. I think I have a blown head gasket or cracked head. My thoughts are that I am getting exhaust gas in my water ports. Any thoughts on this. By the way there does not appear to be any oil in my water...yet. Sure not looking forward to the tear down. |
Sounds more like a head gasket or intake gasket on wrong. Blown head gasket or cracked head would not over heat that fast, and should blow water out of the radatior or out the exhaust.

I'll cast my vote for there being an air pocket trapped in the cooling system somewhere
|
Jim;
Good point. Clois, take the temp sensor out of the intake and add water until it comes out of the intake. Re install temp sensor, and see what happens. Poorboy PS, if you haven't tried this already. |
...and while you have the sensor out, test it by dipping the sensor in some boiling water. Carefully.
my 2 cents. |
Hey! I already answered on the other post!

I had this same thing happen a while back and it was the head gasket that was the culprit. It was blocking the water return on one head (the one with the sensor in it) so there was no circulation on that side. If there is a spot in the other head to put the sensor?? or is it on the intake manifold?
If a head gasket were leaking exhaust into your water jackets the cooling system would be pressurizing as a result. Are you dumping water?? Also try running with no radiator cap and see if you are getting any bubbling at the top of the tank. Had both happen before. Sure was pissed when I didn't see the difference in the one head gasket while assembling the motor. |

The temp sensor is in the intake. The head gaskets have front marked on them, but when you put them on one will look like it is on upside down. This will block one water passage from the block to the head. Poorboy |
Too Hot
Well the problem was that the machine shop that assembled the engine put both head gaskets on backwards ie: the left and right head gaskets had the water passages blocked at the rear of the heads. My machinist (Steve Carbones) here in Tulsa tells me it is a common mistake usually made by those who normally build Chevy engines. So I have taken my heads over to Carbone's to be magnafluxed and when I get them back I will pick up another set of top end gaskets (Felpro) and re-assemble the beast. $65.00 for the magnaflux and probably about $75.00 for head gaskets.
Thanks everyone for your input. Clois Harlan |
I hope you have taken the time to let the shop know the problem and that you want to be payed back for the cost out of pocket you have.

Clois,
Why not take a negative situation and turn it into a positive situation. While you have the heads off anyway and have to go thru all that work, get the Edelbrock aluminum heads, so that after you are done, you will have a way better engine than when you started for all your efforts. Only $1,100!!! (I am good at spending other peoples money) Ed |
too hot
Hey Ed, can I borrow $1,100.00 I will surely pay you on Tuesday?
No kidding I think that might be the straw if you know what I mean. I think I may be able to tackle that feat in the fourth quarter of 02. |
When I bought my Edelbrock heads, I told my wife that I was going to get something for the Cobra (so as not to totaly decieve her), but gave my buddy the cash and had him put the bill on his credit card so that the dollar amount never came up.
 Ed |
Damn we sure think alike! Done that already.
