Auburn LSD - in a Ford 9"
 
I just installed an Auburn LSD into my Ford 9" Rear end.
There is no oil in the diff at this time (still building the rest of the car!)

My issue is, all of the shafts turn independently - ie the drive shaft will spin, but neither wheel does, and I can spin each wheel independent of the others.

The wheels do rachet - from the operation of the diff I'm assuming...

My question is, this does not seem right, however it is a new LSD unit (never under power) and may need some torque through it to get he proper operation?

Or is something not right with the LSD unit?

Any thoughts?

Probably all dumb questions>
But you did set up the ring and pinion backlash after installing the locker?
The Locker you installed has the correct splines for your axles 28, 31,35?
The new locker width is not substantially narrower than the old unit? (Can't imagine that)

all good questions.
Backlash and R&P pattern set at installation (have done a few times!)
31 spines as the factory open diff
Axles fully inserted into the diff (as far as I can tell)

I have not put car on floor and moved, only spun the wheels at this point. It is not acting as I though it should, hence the questions.

I think if I put oil in it, place on the ground and roll about, it may change, but not sure.

I may need torque though it to set the clutches?

Trying to avoid pulling it all back out, and still not sure if I can bench test it at that point either.

Anything else to try?

That full on disconnect has to the the locker then. Although the unit does need lube its not Hydraulically locked or engaged. Before you go further and add lube I'd contact Auburn tech support. Mucho easier to R&R the unit when its still dry.....

My thoughts as well...
tech said something seemed funny.
Suggested trying to shock the system somehow to see if it is just tight and not engaging.
This unit has been on the shelf, dry for some time, maybe needs a bit of coaxing.

I think you are on point and just have to wake the unit up. I have been running this type of Auburn Unit in a Ford 9 inch since 2007 and it has operated flawless other than having to replace a leaking pinion seal about 5 years ago. Replaced it with a Teflon low drag seal and it has been dry ever since. It appears that you locatedin Ann Arbor, MI. We now call Indian River, MI home in the summer months.
