Helicopter Tape
Hi Guys. My car is due out of the paint shop in a few weeks, and one thing I need to sort out is how to protect the lower front edges of the rear wings from stone chips (no trailer queen here!).
I do not want to go the ally/stainless "spat" route. I have heard of two things that I could use - "helicopter tape" and something called "Invincashield". Does anyone have any experience of either of these, and do they really stop stone chips? Thanks Wilf |
Wilf: Don't have any experience with this stuff but it looks interesting. Here is the link if you haven't been there.

I have "Armourfend" on the nose of a Porsche 911, which is very low and VERY vulnerable to stone chips. It seems to work great. I believe it is a 3M film, probably similar to other films available. I have seen Armourfend ads in several of the British car mags, such as EVO, and (I think) CAR.

We use the 3M material - to much money- but it does work. If it gets too beat up, remove with a hair dryer and install new stuff.
Goes around coumpound curves pretty good too! DV |
Wilf - You could always flog the 427 and buy a 289 street car, or "slabside" as they call them over there. Job solved

DV - when you say the 3M material - is that the aforementioned "helicopter tape"?? And does it come in sheet as well as strip form?
Andy - I too like the 289 look, we have the "Hawk 289" replica over here, very pretty it is too. However, since British "humour" tends toward the ironical, I personally like the irony of a "restrained British gentleman" driving around in the "pumped up with steroids" version namely the 427! Anyhows, I gotta finish the 427 first! If I had the money, I would have one of each, the 427 with the torquey stroker, the 289 with a "screamer". Thanks for your input all Wilf |
Wilf,
The material is 3M 84911, available on this side of the pond in body shop supply stores. It is very similar to the Porsche product, if not identical. |
Wilf,
I was just on the phone with "Invinca-shield". They make a completet kit for the Cobra and in fact Superformance contracts them to do all the cars that come into that area. The whole kit is $192.00 but the fender "covers" are $27.00 ea. I explained that no two Cobras seem to be the same in the fender area. The Fellow I was speaking with , Tom Bell said no problem, just send a pattern, note right and left side and they will cut them. Bish |
Bish - I do hope you didn't make that 'phone call especially because of my question. If you did, then one day I really must get over to meet some of you folks in person and say thanks. I would love to ship my own car over for a tour, but that might have to wait until I retire!!
Invincashield UK seem equally helpful - they said they would let me buy the stuff in sheet form (24" wide) so I could get the fender protection up as high as I wanted by making up my own shapes. They would also throw in the necessary "wet stuff" for fitting. So - good service does sometimes exist here in the UK! Wilf |
Wilf,
No, as a matter of fact, I am in the same process as you re; the fender stone guards. I just happened to see your post at nearly the same time. The idea of getting a sheet of that stuf is also appealing, will have to ask them about that too. Come on over this summer, we got some good stuff planned. Bish |
