custom headers....who can do?
I need a set of headers for my 289 motor. Since my frame is not common around it will need to be custom made, and to make it worst it will need to be done at distance from measurements and photos....cannot bring the car there!
Anybody had a similar situation and satisfied of the results? I would surely appreciate your suggestions. Thank you. |
I would also like to know of someone to do custom headers (ideally in Ontario). The Johnex cars have the headers split around the steering box.
I also know why they cover the headers in heat rap... to hide the welding on the headers, as they look like they were done by as kid in grade 9 shop class. |

I am in the same boat, as I am doing an undercar exhaust. My solution is a flatbed towtruck to take the car to the shop. I had some suggest a less expensive header set as a sacrificial set to get the flange you require. It also saves a little of the custom work needed. The shop can cut off the flanges and/or use some of the headers as they came mass produced. |
You can buy just the flanges from a number of different sources. Might save some money and make a neater job. Also if you can gas weld you can buy some u-bens and tubing and build your own. It's not that hard.

A friend needed to do the long distance custom header thing. He actually made a basic jig and couriered it to the guy. The pipes turned out perfectly, but my friend probably spent 3 full days just making this basic looking jig (He mounted up a starter motor, oil filter, dummy chassis rail etc)
Lots of work to organise, but it looks fantastic now!!! |

Do the headers yourself and save lot's of $ Take 8pcs. of 1/8" all thread and clamp washers (nuts on either side) every couple of inches, or at least where they come close near the body exit. Have a local muffler shop bend your tubing...stainless is best if you can buy it for them (use thick wall) Buy the correct flanges (Summit) and mark the angles of tube to flanges (you can grind the tubes close. Have a welder (or the muffler shop) weld away...taking care to hold the 4 tubes together (I used wire and wood) @ $300 Coat, paint or polish and you are on your way. My only problem was using thick wall tubing which was a real ***** to push around into my side pipes. p.s. grinding down the welds make for future cracked areas...Also, I bought a 12" length of tubing which was one size smaller - and cut several 2" sleeves to join straight areas...made it much easier to position the tubes. scratch:MECOOL: |
Well guys , I can help Wadesdad because they would just be a duplicate of mine. I built mine and sent them to Southern Compitition Coatnigs for ceramic coating. They turned out beautiful. They are not too difficult to make, but should have the car or a pattern or design with full dimensions from all angles. Good luck
