Jet Nuts
Are Jet Nuts and the bolts they are attached to only good for the initial application like nylon lock nuts are. Once they are used, if removed, they have to be replaced.

Jet Nuts have a reduced hex area and a flange on the nut ....the nut is elliptical so the locking action is completely around all of the threads, not just a piece of plastic stuck in the top of the nut.
On the rear Axles, their is enough vibration that the torque on the halfshafts bolts will come loose after one session on the track....many times when we come off the track we had to check & re-torque these bolts after every session.
Jet Nuts reduced the amount of times that the torque was reduced and we could go many sessions....we still checked the torque but it was good. |

The major advantages of an all metal lock nut are resistance to heat and the additional metal thread of the fastener given the same fastener depth of the Nylock nut, you’ll gain griping material. The Nylock nuts will give you no mechanical advantage in the nylon locking area.
Jet nuts are a fairly modern design, back in the 50s and 60s Flexlock nuts were the norm in the aviation industry and also in the race car community, sort of a trickledown technology. SAI used aviation Flexlock nuts and aviation AN bolts on their competition Cobras in critical areas like the driveline and chassis components.

Even AC Cars supplied British all metal aviation hardware for the 1/2 shafts on the street 260/289 and 427 Cobras....note the shoulder or grip area on the factory AC bolt in the photo.

Even when SAI started manufacturing Continuation Cobras in the late 1990s and early 2000s they supplied aviation AN bolts and Flexlock aviation nuts on the rollers they delivered.

As long as you can not fully thread the Jet nut onto the bolt or stud by hand the fastener can be reused, if you can fully thread the Jet nut onto the threads it is worn out and needs to be replaced.
