(427) Engine serial number decode question.

Can somebody point me to a document that will teach me how to decode the serial # on the back of the engine (427 side oiler) ?

Is there a registry of engine numbers ?

Some of the digits on my engine are hard to read but they appear to be:
8 F ? 3 ? 6 7 7

Thanks in advance
Mike

8=1968
F=Dearborn
0 1, 2, 3=body style
? would be engine code
677 xxx would be the rest of the VIN for a specific vehicle

However, Ford did not stamp the entire VIN on the back of any block, nor did they install the sideoiler in anything factory production related in 1968, except the 1968 Cougar GT-E

Where exactly are you finding these numbers stamped, and can you post a picture of it?

Hello and Thank You for the reply.

The numbers were taken from the pad on the back of the block, under the driver side head. I cleaned it with a scotchbrite pad and took the photo with my iPhone.

Here is a photo:

8F(blank-no stamp)35677

Service item, over the counter, where someone stamped numbers back in to block. Not as uncommon as you might imagine.
Casting numbers and date codes off the block and heads is your next step.

Thank You, that's good information and explains a lot.
The details line up with the history of my car.

Mike,

As soon as I read "the previous owner said" I knew there was more to the story........As for Bill Kolb owning and racing the car, not likely, as Bill did not race any 69-70's to the best of my knowledge. What are the last four of your cars VIN, I have all of the currently produced registries. Most entries have owner information back to the cars inception. As for having the motor installed at Gotham Ford (where both my 69 and 70's where originally ordered by Bill), the SAAC registrar may have some information on that.
Might want to contact Vinny, and update the owner information and send a current picture, as the 69/70 registry is going to be sent to the printer soon

Bill S.

PS: I'm betting, as with 99.95% of such claims, that a previous owner, and not a dealer, installed the 427 Sideoiler, I'd be curious to know the date codes on the block and heads, not just the basic casting codes.
