302 Windsor - Alternator
I have just finished rebuilding my engine and have bolted the alternator that came with it, back on.
How do I wire it up? It's a Motorola (don't have the model number here, but can post it later if needed) |
Did you make any notes or wiring diagrams of the alternator (and regulator if equiped) before you took it off?

I bought the engine "as is" from someones back garden for me to rebuild...not a wire in sight.:(

I used a Delco alternator to avoid this, so I'm not really qualified to answer this. There's a post a coupla notches above this one with Ford voltage regulator issues addressed. Check upstairs. Any idea what year vintage the motor, and presumably the alternator is? On the block, just above the starter will be the block letters; something like C6AE-. The first letter is the decade, C=1960 - 1969. Second number is the year. So C6 would be a 1966 year of manufacture. I have some vintage Motors service manuals I use for oldies. Whatever you do, don't use Lucas. He's known as the Prince of Darkness over here. |

I don't find "Motorola" as a Ford application in my books. I do show them for AMC so it's possible that you have a retro fitted alternator. Anyway, I do show a number of Motorola alternators and the wiring is slightly different for each. What I do show is that they all appear to be internally regulated ( a raised plate on the back of the alternator with three bolts and two diodes on it) If you can provide a biut more info I can see if I have the wiring info. good luck, mike "monster" |

I've just had another quick look at the alternator, and can't see any numbers on it (have to take it off to see underneath though) can you tell the model from these pics? simon |

It appears to be a french motorola with a built in voltage regulator. It should have a term. marked D+, if so this will be where the exciter wire or idiot light wire goes, the battery wire goes to the B+ term. Hope this helped.

There is a section on Motorola alternators in my '76 Motors manual, but they all have external regulators. Yours is a later internally regulated model.
If, as stated above, you have two terminals coming out of the unit; one large one (1/4" - 5/16"), and one small one (10-24 or 10-32) it's easy. The large terminal goes to the battery, and the smaller one goes to the ignition (it energizes the alternator). If more terminals, you need to do more research. Find a shop with a book on your alt with a schematic. Find a shop that repairs alternators, and let them test it. Then tell you how it hooks up. It may need rebuilding anyway. Last. Open the catalog and get a one wire alt, and bolt it in. |
